Aconitum napellus - 2026

Aconitum napellus, commonly known as monkshood, is a dramatic and stately perennial recognised for its tall, erect spires of deep violet-blue, helmet-shaped flowers. Blooming in mid to late summer, it brings a bold splash of colour and strong vertical structure to borders, standing out beautifully against its finely divided, dark green foliage. A long-established favourite in traditional cottage and herbaceous gardens, it is admired for both its ornamental impact and reliability.

This hardy perennial thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil and performs best in partial shade, although it will tolerate full sun in cooler climates. Once established, it requires little maintenance and can provide many years of seasonal interest. Its flowers are highly attractive to bees, adding ecological value alongside visual appeal. However, as with all aconitums, care is essential when handling or planting, since all parts of the plant are highly poisonous if ingested and can cause skin irritation.
