Potentilla aurea - 2026

Potentilla aurea is a charming alpine perennial often called golden cinquefoil, valued for its bright buttercup-yellow flowers which open from late spring into summer. The blossoms sit atop low, fine foliage, forming a compact cushion-like habit. Its small size makes it superb for rockeries, gravel beds, or the front of a sunny border, where the vivid yellow blooms pop against stones or darker foliage. The plant’s green leaves die back in winter, returning each spring with fresh growth.

This plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, particularly in gritty or loamy mixes that do not stay waterlogged. It is hardy, low-maintenance, and once settled requires little care beyond ensuring it has good drainage. Although not native to the UK, it makes an excellent addition to gardens seeking alpine character or bright early summer colour.
