Rheum rhabarbarum - 2026

Rheum rhabarbarum, commonly known as garden rhubarb, is a robust perennial with large, crinkled, deep green leaves and thick, edible red to green stems. In summer, it produces tall, branching flower panicles of small greenish-white flowers, adding height and texture to borders or vegetable gardens. While primarily grown for its culinary stems, it also attracts pollinators such as bees, providing ecological value in the garden. Its bold foliage makes it an excellent architectural feature in mixed plantings or alongside ponds.

It thrives in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. Medium-maintenance, it benefits from regular watering and mulching to support vigorous growth. Non-native to the UK, it is cultivated both for its ornamental foliage and edible stems, providing both visual and practical appeal.
