Smilacina racemosa - 2026

Smilacina racemosa is a graceful, rhizomatous perennial that forms tidy clumps of pleated, lance-shaped leaves with arching stems. In late spring to early summer it bears plume-like panicles of small, starry white flowers held above the foliage; the airy, scented blooms create an elegant, meadowy effect and are followed by red berries that add autumn interest. Its refined habit and soft texture make it an excellent choice for shaded borders, woodland gardens, damp banks or alongside ponds where it contrasts beautifully with hostas, ferns and other shade-loving plants.

Beyond its ornamental appeal, Smilacina racemosa supports wildlife — the nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other pollinators and the berries are taken by birds. It prefers partial to full shade and moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil and spreads slowly by rhizomes to form lasting colonies.
