Tulbaghia violacea variegated (Society garlic) - Marginal Pond Plants - Pond Plants - Water Plants - MP117
What is Society Garlic?
Society Garlic (Tulbaghia violacea 'Variegated'), is a clump-forming marginal plant grown for its strap-shaped, cream-streaked leaves and clusters of small lilac flowers. It's a versatile choice for pond margins and borders, adding colour and structure without needing deep water. Its compact habit makes it a good fit for smaller ponds as well as larger, mixed planting schemes.
Society Garlic Key Features
- Clump-forming perennial with variegated, strap-shaped leaves
- Clusters of small, star-shaped lilac flowers in summer
- Compact, well-behaved growth habit
- Tolerant of light shade as well as full sun
- Suits pond margins, borders and containers alike
What are the Benefits of Society Garlic?
Society Garlic brings decorative interest to a pond margin at a time of year when some other marginals are past their best, with flowers that can help support nectar-feeding insects such as bees and butterflies. Its foliage stays attractive well beyond the flowering period, giving the plant a longer season of interest than many marginals. It's also a low-maintenance option, needing little more than the occasional tidy-up.
Where Does Society Garlic Work Best?
This plant is best suited to moist but well-drained conditions at the pond edge rather than deeper water. It's particularly well suited to:
- Pond margins and shallow planting shelves
- Mixed borders close to water features
- Naturalistic planting schemes alongside other marginals
How Do I Plant Society Garlic?
Plant into a suitable aquatic basket using aquatic compost, positioning it at a shallow marginal depth rather than fully submerged. Most pond plants do best with at least four to six hours of sunlight a day, so choose a spot around the margin that gets reasonable light. Once established, it needs very little upkeep beyond dividing the clump every few years if it becomes congested.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.

Planting & Care
Sunlight Requirements
Most pond plants thrive in full sun, with at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily for the best growth and flowering.
Planting Pots and Compost
Plant aquatic plants in suitable aquatic baskets using aquatic compost to help support healthy root development and prevent soil from clouding the water.
Planting Depth
Position plants at the correct water depth, as different varieties prefer marginal, shallow, or deep-water conditions.
Oxygen
Water lilies and oxygenating plants help improve water quality, provide shade, and create a healthier environment for fish and wildlife.
