Is lesser bulrush suitable for a garden pond?

Yes, with care. It is vigorous: the RHS warns that its roots may puncture pond liners and that it can spread 2.5–4 m if left unchecked. In a lined pond, always grow it in a strong aquatic basket. For a very small pond, the miniature bulrush, Typha minima, is a better choice.

Where to plant it

  • Wildlife ponds and lakes with natural clay or earth banks
  • Lined garden ponds, in a strong aquatic basket
  • Wetland and reedbed planting

Is it good for wildlife?

Yes. It gives cover to wildfowl and other wildlife, and the caterpillars of the bulrush wainscot moth feed in its stems.

Which size should I buy?
