Typha minima, known as miniature bulrush or dwarf reedmace, is a small relative of the common bulrush. It has fine, grassy leaves and, in July and August, short, rounded brown seed heads instead of the tall "cigars" of the larger species.

Is miniature bulrush suitable for a small pond?

Yes. It is the bulrush to choose for small ponds, patio ponds and containers, where the common bulrush would be far too big.

How to plant and care for it

Plant in an aquatic basket in spring with up to 10 cm of water over the crown. Leave the foliage over winter and cut dead leaves back to just above water level in spring. Koi and ducks may eat young shoots.

Does it spread?

It is much smaller than the common bulrush, but the RHS notes it can become a nuisance if not managed. Grow it in a basket and divide it when the roots fill the pot.

Which size should I buy?

Bare-root plants (7 cm, 9 cm, 1 litre and 3 litre) arrive without a pot or compost and are the most economical way to plant a group. Potted plants (9 cm, 1 litre and 3 litre) arrive growing in our peat-free compost and give a faster display. Packs of 3 come in 7 cm, 9 cm, 1 litre and 3 litre bare-root sizes and cost less per plant. The 2x Pot & Compost option is two plants supplied with pots and compost.

Pond depth: 0 - 10cm
