Key Points
Hessian, also known as burlap, can indeed be used in aquatic ponds for various purposes. Here's a description of its usage:
- Erosion Control : Hessian fabric can be employed to control soil erosion in and around aquatic ponds. When placed over soil or substrate, it helps to stabilize the ground, preventing erosion caused by water movement or weathering.
- Plant Protection : In aquatic gardening, hessian can serve as a protective barrier for newly planted aquatic vegetation. Wrapping the roots of plants in hessian before planting helps to hold the substrate in place and protect delicate roots from damage during transplantation.
- Filtration Aid : Hessian can be used as a natural filtration material in pond filtration systems. It acts as a mechanical filter, trapping debris and particulate matter suspended in the water, thereby improving water clarity and quality.
- Aquatic Habitat Enhancement : In some cases, hessian can be used to create habitat structures for aquatic organisms. By bundling or stacking hessian sacks or sheets, it's possible to create shelters for fish, amphibians, and invertebrates, providing refuge and breeding areas.
- Aesthetic Purposes : Hessian can also be used decoratively in aquatic ponds. Its natural, earthy appearance blends well with the surrounding landscape, adding a rustic or organic aesthetic to the pond environment.
- Biodegradability : One of the significant advantages of using hessian in aquatic ponds is its biodegradability. Over time, hessian naturally decomposes without leaving harmful residues, making it an environmentally friendly choice for pond applications.
- Temporary Pond Liner : In temporary pond setups or during pond maintenance, hessian can serve as a temporary pond liner. It helps to retain water and prevent soil disturbance until a permanent solution can be implemented.
Overall, hessian is a versatile material that can be utilized in various ways to enhance the functionality, aesthetics, and ecological value of aquatic ponds. Its natural properties and biodegradability make it a practical and eco-friendly choice for pond management and landscaping projects.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
At Lincs Plants, we operate from two main locations. When you place an order, we prepare and pack plants across both sites depending on what you’ve ordered.
Site 1 – Packing and Distribution
This site holds:
Oxygenating bunches
Loose lilies
Aquarium plants
Snails
Pots
Pond packs
Site 2 – Growing Site
This site holds:
Potted lilies
Potted plants
Plugs
Floating plants
Tropical plants
Fruit trees
We start processing orders each morning at 8am.
Orders that include items from Site 2 are dispatched the following day.
Orders that only include items from Site 1 are usually dispatched the same day.
During our peak periods, we can process up to 3,000 orders a day across multiple departments. Each department either supports a main packing team or packs orders directly.
We have five collections a day, so orders can leave throughout the day as soon as they’re ready.
During busy times, if we experience any delays, we’ll post updates on our social media and website to give everyone a heads up. This helps keep customers informed if there’s likely to be a delay of a few days.
