Key Points
Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow', commonly known as Carpet Bugleweed, is a versatile and colourful ground cover plant renowned for its striking tri-coloured foliage and vibrant flower spikes. This cultivar adds a dynamic splash of colour to shaded areas and is ideal for creating a low-maintenance yet visually appealing garden feature.
Description
Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' grows to a height of 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) with a spread of 30–45 cm (12–18 inches). The plant forms a dense, spreading mat of oval-shaped leaves, each beautifully variegated with shades of creamy white, deep green, and rich burgundy. This foliage creates year-round interest, even when the plant is not in bloom.
In late spring to early summer (May to June), short spikes of vivid blue to violet flowers rise above the foliage, providing a stunning contrast. These blooms attract pollinators and bring an additional layer of charm to the plant's already vibrant display.
Growing Conditions
Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' thrives in partial shade to full shade but can tolerate some sunlight if the soil remains consistently moist. It prefers fertile, well-drained soils but is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy or clay soils. A neutral to slightly acidic pH is ideal.
Hardy in the UK, this plant is frost-tolerant and maintains its vibrant foliage throughout the year, making it a reliable and attractive choice for temperate gardens.
Propagation and Care
Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' is propagated through division or by planting its creeping runners. Division is best performed in spring or autumn. To propagate, separate clumps or rooted runners and replant them in well-prepared soil.
Routine care includes:
- Ensuring the soil stays moist, especially during dry spells.
- Trimming spent flower spikes to maintain tidiness and encourage fresh growth.
- Monitoring for overcrowding and dividing plants every few years to maintain vigour and prevent disease.
Uses
Ornamental:
Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' is ideal for ground cover in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or under trees and shrubs. Its striking foliage pairs well with plants like Hosta, Heuchera, and Ferns for a rich tapestry of texture and colour.
Rock Gardens:
Its compact, creeping habit and tri-coloured leaves make it an excellent choice for softening the edges of rockeries or pathways.
Container Planting:
This Ajuga cultivar thrives in pots and containers, providing year-round colour and a vibrant backdrop for seasonal flowers.
Erosion Control:
The plant's dense, spreading habit stabilizes soil on slopes or banks, preventing erosion and creating a lush, colourful carpet.
Ecological Value
Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators with its nectar-rich flowers. Its dense foliage provides shelter for small insects, while its creeping growth helps improve soil quality and biodiversity in shaded areas.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: While relatively drought-tolerant once established, consistent moisture promotes healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
- Disease Resistance: Good air circulation and avoiding overcrowding help prevent fungal issues such as powdery mildew.
- Spread Management: This cultivar spreads via runners and may require periodic control to prevent encroachment into unwanted areas.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
At Lincs Plants, we operate from two main locations. When you place an order, we prepare and pack plants across both sites depending on what you’ve ordered.
