Key Points
Ajuga reptans 'Variegata', commonly known as Variegated Bugleweed, is a visually striking perennial ground cover celebrated for its uniquely patterned foliage and vivid flower spikes. This low-growing plant is ideal for brightening shaded areas and adding texture to borders, rock gardens, and woodland settings.
Description
Ajuga reptans 'Variegata' grows to a height of 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) with a spread of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches). It forms a dense, spreading mat of rounded leaves marked with irregular creamy-white or silvery variegation against a green background. This striking foliage remains attractive year-round, providing visual interest even in the colder months.
From late spring to early summer (May to June), short spikes of deep blue to violet flowers rise above the foliage. These blooms add a burst of colour and attract pollinators, enhancing the plant's appeal as an ecological addition to the garden.
Growing Conditions
Ajuga reptans 'Variegata' thrives in partial shade to full shade, although it can tolerate some morning sun in cooler climates. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and adapts to various types, including clay or sandy soils. A neutral to slightly acidic pH is optimal for growth.
Hardy in the UK, this plant tolerates frost and grows vigorously in temperate regions, making it a reliable choice for a variety of garden settings.
Propagation and Care
Ajuga reptans 'Variegata' spreads naturally through creeping runners and is easily propagated by division. Division is best performed in spring or autumn. To propagate, carefully separate clumps or rooted runners and replant them in prepared soil.
Routine care includes:
- Ensuring consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods.
- Removing flower spikes after blooming to maintain a neat appearance and prevent self-seeding.
- Dividing clumps every 2–3 years to prevent overcrowding and maintain vigour.

Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is preferred, though the plant tolerates occasional dryness once established. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
- Spread Management: This cultivar spreads via runners and may require occasional control in smaller spaces to prevent encroachment.
- Disease Prevention: Ensure good air circulation and divide plants periodically to reduce the risk of fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
At Lincs Plants, we operate from two main locations. When you place an order, we prepare and pack plants across both sites depending on what you’ve ordered.
