Arundo donax 'Variegata', commonly known as Variegated Giant Reed Grass, is a striking, tall ornamental grass prized for its bold, variegated foliage and towering stature. Ideal for creating dramatic vertical interest, screening, or as a focal point in large gardens, it thrives in moist or wet soils and sunny locations.
Description
- Height: 250–400 cm (8–13 feet)
- Spread: 120–200 cm (4–6 feet)
- Foliage: The foliage consists of tall, arching stems with broad, lance-shaped leaves. The leaves are bright green with creamy white stripes, creating a bold, striped effect that is highly ornamental.

- Growth Habit: Forms dense, upright clumps with bamboo-like stems, creating a bold architectural statement.
Growing Conditions
Arundo donax 'Variegata' is a hardy and vigorous plant that thrives in a variety of garden settings, particularly in damp areas.
- Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil. It thrives in wet or boggy areas and tolerates heavy clay soils.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil but can tolerate short periods of drought once established. It can also grow in shallow water, making it ideal for ponds or streamsides.
- Light: Thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Full sun promotes the best variegation and growth.
This plant is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Propagate by dividing clumps in early spring or autumn. This is the easiest and most effective method.
- Cuttings: Stem cuttings can also be used for propagation in warmer climates.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to maintain consistently moist soil.
- Remove dead or damaged stems in early spring to encourage new growth.
- Fertilize annually with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth and strong variegation.
- Cut back stems to ground level in late autumn or early spring to refresh the plant.
Uses
- Ornamental Grass: The bold, variegated foliage and tall stature make it an excellent choice for adding height and drama to large borders or mixed plantings.
- Screening: Its dense growth habit makes it a great choice for creating natural screens or windbreaks.
- Water Gardens: Thrives in wet areas, making it perfect for planting along pond edges, streams, or in boggy areas.
- Containers: Can be grown in large containers to control its size and spread, making it suitable for patios or urban gardens.
Ecological Value
- Wildlife Habitat: Provides shelter for birds and insects, especially in naturalized or wildlife-friendly gardens.
- Erosion Control: The dense root system helps stabilize soil in wet or sloped areas, preventing erosion.
Considerations
-
Invasiveness: Like other Arundo donax varieties, 'Variegata' can spread vigorously through rhizomes. To prevent it from becoming invasive:
- Plant in a contained area or use root barriers.
- Regularly monitor and remove unwanted shoots.
- Moisture Needs: Consistently moist soil is essential for healthy growth, especially in drier climates.
- Space Requirements: Its large size requires ample space, so avoid planting in small or confined gardens.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
