Key Points
Asplenium scolopendrium ‘Angustatum’, commonly known as Narrow Hart’s Tongue Fern, is a distinctive evergreen fern known for its elegant, narrow, strap-like leaves. This cultivar is a variation of the classic Hart’s Tongue Fern, offering a more refined and architectural appearance, making it an excellent choice for shaded and woodland gardens.
Description
Asplenium scolopendrium ‘Angustatum’ grows to a height of 30–50 cm (12–20 inches) with a similar spread. The plant forms a dense rosette of upright, glossy green fronds that are notably narrower than those of the standard Hart’s Tongue Fern. The margins of the fronds are often slightly undulating, adding to their visual appeal.
This fern remains evergreen, providing year-round texture and interest in shaded garden areas. Its tidy, compact habit makes it particularly suitable for smaller spaces or as an accent in larger plantings.
Growing Conditions
Asplenium scolopendrium ‘Angustatum’ thrives in partial shade to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It grows best in slightly alkaline to neutral soils but can tolerate slightly acidic conditions.
Hardy in the UK, this fern is frost-tolerant and performs well in temperate climates, making it a reliable choice for shaded borders, rock gardens, and woodland settings.
Propagation and Care
Asplenium scolopendrium ‘Angustatum’ is propagated through division or spores:
- Division: In early spring, carefully lift and divide mature plants, ensuring each section has a healthy crown and roots. Replant divisions immediately in prepared soil.
- Spores: Collect spores from the undersides of mature fronds and sow them in a sterilized growing medium under controlled conditions. This method requires patience and is typically used by specialist growers.
Routine care includes:
- Keeping the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry periods.
- Removing damaged or old fronds in early spring to encourage fresh growth.
- Applying a layer of mulch or compost annually to maintain soil fertility and moisture.
Uses
Ornamental:
Asplenium scolopendrium ‘Angustatum’ is a striking addition to shaded borders, woodland gardens, or rock gardens. Its slender fronds add vertical interest and pair beautifully with plants like Hostas, Heucheras, and other ferns.
Container Planting:
This fern’s compact size and evergreen nature make it an excellent choice for containers, where it can serve as a focal point or complement seasonal plantings.
Ground Cover:
When planted in groups, it forms an attractive, low-maintenance ground cover for shaded areas, helping to suppress weeds.
Ecological Value
Asplenium scolopendrium ‘Angustatum’ contributes to biodiversity by providing shelter for small insects and creating a microhabitat in shaded garden areas. Its ability to thrive in woodland settings makes it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: While tolerant of short dry spells, consistent moisture is essential for healthy growth. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.
- Soil pH: This fern prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Adding lime can help if soil is too acidic.
- Light Conditions: Full shade or dappled light is ideal. Too much direct sunlight may scorch the fronds.
Summary
Asplenium scolopendrium ‘Angustatum’ is a refined and adaptable fern that brings year-round elegance to shaded gardens. Its narrow, glossy fronds and compact habit make it a versatile choice for borders, rockeries, containers, or woodland settings. Easy to care for and evergreen, this cultivar offers both beauty and functionality, enhancing the texture and structure of any shaded planting scheme.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
