This elegant fern is perfect for adding texture, colour, and softness to shaded gardens, woodland settings, and container plantings.
Description
Athyrium Niponicum 'Pewter Lace' grows to a height of 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) with a spread of 45–60 cm (18–24 inches). Its finely divided, arching fronds have a distinctive pewter sheen with hints of green and burgundy along the midribs, creating a metallic appearance that shines in dappled light.
This fern emerges in spring, showcases its beautiful foliage throughout the growing season, and dies back in autumn, reemerging in the following spring.
Growing Conditions
Athyrium Niponicum 'Pewter Lace' thrives in partial shade to full shade and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soils and tolerates a range of garden conditions, provided the soil remains evenly moist.
This variety is hardy in the UK, tolerating frost and performing reliably in temperate climates.
Propagation and Care
Athyrium Niponicum 'Pewter Lace' is propagated by division:
- Division: In early spring, divide established clumps, ensuring each section has roots and growing points. Replant the divisions immediately in prepared soil.
- Spacing: Allow 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) between plants to accommodate their spreading habit and ensure good airflow.
Routine care includes:
- Keeping the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry periods.
- Applying a layer of mulch annually to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil fertility.
- Removing dead or damaged fronds in late autumn or early spring to tidy the plant.
Uses
Ornamental:
Athyrium Niponicum 'Pewter Lace' is ideal for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and rock gardens. Its silvery, metallic fronds pair beautifully with shade-loving plants like Hostas, Heucheras, and other ferns.
Container Planting:
This fern thrives in pots and containers, making it a great choice for patios or shaded balconies where its unique foliage can be appreciated up close.
Ground Cover:
When planted in groups, this fern forms an attractive, low-maintenance ground cover for shaded areas, creating a lush and textural effect.
Ecological Value
Athyrium Niponicum 'Pewter Lace' contributes to garden biodiversity by providing shelter for small insects and improving soil health in shaded areas. Its foliage helps retain moisture in the soil and creates a microhabitat for beneficial organisms.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is essential for healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.
- Light Preferences: While it thrives in full shade, the best metallic sheen develops in dappled or partial shade.
- Low Maintenance: This fern requires minimal care beyond regular watering and occasional division to rejuvenate older clumps.

Its silvery fronds with hints of burgundy and green create a captivating focal point or ground cover in woodland gardens, borders, or containers. Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
At Lincs Plants, we operate from two main locations. When you place an order, we prepare and pack plants across both sites depending on what you’ve ordered.
