Description
- Height: 45–60 cm (18–24 inches)
- Spread: 45–60 cm (18–24 inches)

- Growth Habit: Forms a compact, clump-forming habit with gracefully arching foliage.
Growing Conditions
Carex elata ‘Aurea’ thrives in consistently moist or wet soils and tolerates a range of light conditions, making it versatile for various garden settings.
- Soil: Prefers moist, rich, well-drained soil but tolerates clay or boggy conditions. It thrives in consistently damp areas such as pond edges or waterlogged borders.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil and can grow in shallow standing water up to 5 cm (2 inches) deep, making it ideal for water gardens.
- Light: Grows best in partial to full sun. In full sun, ensure the soil remains consistently moist to prevent scorching. Partial shade enhances the intensity of the golden foliage.
This sedge is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 2–3 years in early spring or autumn to maintain vigor and control the plant's size. Replant divisions in moist soil.
- Seed: While possible, propagation by seed is less common and time-consuming. Division is the preferred method.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.
- Remove dead or damaged leaves in early spring to encourage fresh growth.
- Apply mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Uses
- Ornamental Grass: The bright foliage and graceful habit make ‘Aurea’ a standout feature in mixed borders, adding vibrant color and texture.
- Water Gardens: Thrives in wet areas, making it perfect for planting along the edges of ponds, streams, or boggy zones.
- Ground Cover: Forms a dense clump that suppresses weeds and provides a lush, low-maintenance ground cover in moist areas.
- Container Planting: Its striking golden foliage works beautifully in container arrangements, particularly when paired with other moisture-loving plants.
Ecological Value
- Wildlife Habitat: Provides shelter for insects and small creatures in naturalized or water-rich environments.
- Erosion Control: The dense root system helps stabilize soil in wet or sloped areas, preventing erosion and improving water retention.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistently moist soil is essential for healthy growth. The plant will not tolerate prolonged dryness.
- Division: Regular division prevents overcrowding and maintains plant vigor.
- Light Sensitivity: In full sun, the foliage may scorch if the soil is not kept moist. Partial shade is recommended in warmer regions.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
