Key Points
Carex flacca, commonly known as Glaucous Sedge or Blue Sedge, is a striking, evergreen perennial that is well-suited for adding texture and contrast in shaded or damp garden areas. Known for its fine, blue-grey foliage and graceful, arching growth habit, this sedge is perfect for borders, meadows, and damp spots where a grass-like accent is desired.
Description
Carex flacca grows to a height of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) with a spread of 30–45 cm (12–18 inches). The plant forms a dense, clump of slender, narrow, blue-grey leaves that arch gracefully outward, creating a soft, grass-like effect in the landscape. Its foliage retains its attractive colour throughout the growing season, providing a cool, blue contrast to other plants.
In late spring to early summer (May to June), Carex flacca produces inconspicuous, greenish-brown flower spikes that rise above the foliage. While the flowers are not showy, they add subtle interest and texture to the plant, enhancing its naturalistic look in the garden.
Growing Conditions
Carex flacca thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is well-suited to a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as they retain some moisture. This sedge is particularly valuable for damp or wet gardens, such as those with ponds or in naturalized areas with moist, shaded spots.
It is hardy in the UK and performs well in temperate climates, tolerating light frost and returning year after year with minimal care.
Propagation and Care
Carex flacca is propagated by division or by seed:
- Division: In spring or autumn, divide mature clumps of the plant by lifting the root ball and separating it into smaller sections. Replant the divisions immediately, ensuring they are at the same depth as the original plant.
- Seed: Sow seeds in early spring or late autumn in moist, well-drained soil. However, growing from seed may take several years for the plant to mature and flower, so division is often the faster method.
Routine care includes:
- Watering regularly to maintain moisture, especially during dry spells.
- Cutting back old or damaged foliage in late autumn to keep the plant looking tidy and to make room for new growth in spring.
- Dividing clumps every few years to prevent overcrowding and promote fresh growth.
Uses
Ornamental:
Carex flacca is an excellent addition to borders, meadow gardens, or water-adjacent plantings. Its cool blue foliage contrasts beautifully with other plants and adds texture and movement to the garden. It pairs well with other moisture-loving plants such as Astilbe, Hostas, and ferns.
Ground Cover:
Glaucous Sedge works well as a low-maintenance ground cover in shaded or damp areas, helping to suppress weeds while adding an attractive, naturalistic texture.
Wildlife Gardens:
This plant is ideal for wildlife-friendly gardens, providing shelter for small insects and offering a soft, grassy habitat for pollinators and other creatures.
Ecological Value
Carex flacca contributes to garden biodiversity by offering shelter to small wildlife. It also helps with soil stabilization in damp or wet areas, making it an effective plant for reducing erosion, especially in gardens with ponds or water features.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is essential for healthy growth. While it tolerates dry conditions once established, it performs best in moist or damp soil.
- Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade is ideal. It thrives in light to medium shade, especially in damp environments, but will struggle in deep shade or excessively dry conditions.
- Spread Management: Carex flacca spreads by rhizomes. Though not invasive, it may benefit from occasional division to maintain its vigour and prevent overcrowding in smaller garden spaces.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
