Key Points
Darmera peltata, commonly known as Umbrella Plant or Indian Rhubarb, is a striking perennial native to North America, particularly found in damp, shaded environments like wetlands, streambanks, and forest edges. It is admired for its large, umbrella-like leaves and unique flowering characteristics, making it an eye-catching addition to shaded or woodland gardens.
Description
Darmera peltata grows to a height of 90–120 cm (36–48 inches) with a spread of 90–120 cm (36–48 inches), forming a large clump of rounded, lobed leaves that can reach up to 45 cm (18 inches) in diameter. These large, glossy, and palmate (hand-shaped) leaves emerge in early spring, creating an attractive backdrop throughout the growing season.
In late spring (April to June), Darmera peltata produces tall, thick stems that bear clusters of small, star-shaped pink or white flowers. The flowers are typically borne in large, umbrella-like cymes that add a striking contrast to the foliage. The plant's distinctive flowers and foliage make it a stunning focal point in damp, shaded garden areas.
Growing Conditions
Darmera peltata thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring moist, well-drained, rich soil. It is particularly suited for gardens with consistently damp conditions, such as near ponds, streams, or in shaded woodland environments. It thrives in areas that have high humidity or regular moisture, making it ideal for boggy gardens or areas with good irrigation.
This perennial plant is hardy in the UK and grows well in temperate climates. It is best planted in areas where the soil stays moist throughout the growing season, though it can tolerate short dry spells once established.
Propagation and Care
Darmera peltata is propagated by division or by seed:
- Division: In early spring or autumn, carefully lift established clumps and divide them into smaller sections. Each section should contain roots and healthy buds. Replant immediately in moist, prepared soil.
- Seed: Sow seeds in early spring in moist soil. However, it can take several seasons for the plant to mature and flower from seed, making division the quicker method.
Routine care includes:
- Keeping the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season, particularly in dry weather.
- Providing mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Removing spent flowers to tidy up the plant, though it generally maintains its ornamental value through its foliage.
Uses
Ornamental:
Darmera peltata is perfect for woodland gardens, bog gardens, and shaded pond edges. Its large, dramatic leaves and beautiful flower clusters make it a focal point in any garden that can accommodate its moisture needs.
Naturalized Planting:
This plant is ideal for naturalizing in damp, shaded areas where it can spread and create a lush, leafy carpet. It can also be used as an attractive ground cover for moist garden beds.
Wildlife Gardens:
The large leaves and clusters of flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a valuable plant for a wildlife-friendly garden.
Ecological Value
Darmera peltata provides habitat and shelter for insects and small wildlife. It also helps to stabilize the soil in damp, marshy areas, reducing erosion along streambanks and pond edges. The plant’s striking flowers attract pollinators, contributing to a healthy garden ecosystem.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Darmera peltata requires consistently moist soil. It should not be planted in areas where the soil tends to dry out.
- Space Management: It can form large clumps and spread, so ensure it has enough space to grow. It may need periodic division to prevent overcrowding in smaller garden areas.
- Winter Care: This plant dies back in winter, but it is hardy and will regrow the following spring with minimal care.
Summary
Darmera peltata is a dramatic and elegant perennial that adds beauty, texture, and height to damp, shaded areas. Its large, umbrella-like leaves and attractive flower clusters make it a valuable addition to woodland gardens, bog gardens, and ponds. With its ecological benefits, such as attracting pollinators and stabilizing soil, Darmera peltata is both an ornamental and functional plant for moisture-rich garden environments.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
