Key Points
Eleocharis palustris, commonly known as Common Spike-Rush, is a hardy aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial that is native to temperate and subarctic regions across the globe. Known for its fine, upright stems and ability to thrive in wet environments, this plant is a staple in naturalized wetlands, water gardens, and pond margins. Its ecological benefits and understated elegance make it an excellent choice for enhancing biodiversity and adding texture to aquatic landscapes.
Description
Eleocharis palustris grows to a height of 30–90 cm (12–36 inches), forming dense clumps of slender, cylindrical stems. The foliage is bright green and grass-like, with no true leaves, as the stems themselves perform photosynthesis.
From late spring to summer (May to July), the plant produces small, spike-like flower heads at the tips of its stems. These flowers are brownish in colour and subtle in appearance, adding a naturalistic charm to water features. Over time, the flowers mature into small nutlets, aiding in seed propagation.
Growing Conditions
Eleocharis palustris thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist to waterlogged soil. It is well-suited for shallow water up to 15 cm (6 inches) deep, making it ideal for pond margins, wetlands, and bog gardens. The plant adapts to a wide range of soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils, provided they remain damp or submerged. It tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH conditions.
Fully hardy in the UK, Common Spike-Rush can withstand frost and regrows vigorously in spring after winter dormancy.
Propagation and Care
Eleocharis palustris can be propagated by division or seed. Division is the most reliable method and is best done in early spring or autumn. To propagate, separate clumps of rhizomes with roots and replant them in suitable moist or waterlogged conditions. Seeds can be sown directly into wet soil or shallow water in spring.
This plant requires minimal care once established. Regular watering is essential to maintain its preferred damp conditions. Dead or damaged stems can be cut back to ground level in late autumn to tidy the plant and prepare it for winter. In naturalized settings, it requires little maintenance and will spread gradually to form dense colonies.
Uses
Ornamental:
Common Spike-Rush is an excellent choice for naturalistic water gardens, pond edges, and wetlands. Its fine, upright stems create a soft, vertical texture that complements other moisture-loving plants such as Iris pseudacorus (Yellow Flag Iris), Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold), and Pontederia cordata (Pickerel Weed).
Erosion Control:
The plant’s dense root system is effective at stabilizing soil along water margins, reducing erosion, and improving the integrity of pond and stream banks.
Naturalized Planting:
This species is ideal for naturalizing in wetland or meadow-like settings, where it can spread to create a lush, verdant habitat.
Ecological Value
Eleocharis palustris provides habitat and shelter for a variety of aquatic and semi-aquatic wildlife. Its stems offer cover for small creatures such as frogs, insects, and birds, while its seeds are a food source for waterfowl and other animals.
The plant also contributes to water quality by filtering sediments and absorbing excess nutrients, making it a valuable addition to constructed wetlands and pond filtration systems.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: This plant requires consistently moist or waterlogged conditions and is not suited for dry areas.
- Spread Management: While not aggressive, Common Spike-Rush can spread gradually through rhizomes. Regular thinning or division can help control its size in smaller spaces.
- Winter Dormancy: The plant dies back in winter, regrowing in spring.
Summary
With its fine, upright stems and ability to thrive in wet conditions, Eleocharis palustris (Common Spike-Rush) is a versatile and ecologically valuable addition to water gardens, pond margins, and wetlands. Its understated elegance and functional benefits, including erosion control and habitat provision, make it a staple for naturalistic and biodiverse aquatic landscapes. Easy to grow and maintain, this plant is an excellent choice for enhancing both the aesthetic and ecological value of any garden setting.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
