Key Points
Eriophorum russeoleum, commonly known as Red Sedge or Red Cotton Grass, is an attractive, grass-like perennial native to temperate regions, including parts of North America and Europe. This plant is known for its striking, cotton-like tufts of flowers and is often found in damp, acidic habitats such as peat bogs and wetlands. It adds a unique, soft texture to water gardens, bog gardens, and other moist, naturalized areas.
Description
Eriophorum russeoleum grows to a height of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) with a spread of approximately 30–45 cm (12–18 inches). The plant forms clumps of narrow, grass-like, green leaves that emerge from a central rosette.
In late spring to summer (May to June), it produces distinctive, fluffy white or cream-coloured flower heads that resemble cotton tufts. The flowers are borne on tall, slender stems, creating a striking contrast to the green foliage. The plant’s flowers turn a reddish-brown color later in the season, contributing to its name "Red Cotton Grass."
Growing Conditions
Eriophorum russeoleum thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, acidic, and well-drained soils. It is commonly found in peat bogs, marshes, and other damp environments. It performs best in areas with consistently moist or waterlogged soil, making it ideal for wetland gardens, pond edges, and areas near streams or lakes.
This species is hardy in the UK, thriving in temperate climates with cool, moist conditions. It is tolerant of acidic soils and can grow in water depths of up to 10 cm (4 inches).
Propagation and Care
Eriophorum russeoleum is propagated by seed or division:
- Seed: Sow seeds in late autumn or early spring in a moist, well-drained medium. It is best to sow them in a location with consistently high humidity or in shallow water to replicate natural conditions.
- Division: Divide established clumps in early spring or autumn, ensuring each division has roots and growing points. Replant divisions immediately in suitable moist soil.
Routine care includes:
- Keeping the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells.
- Mulching around the plant to maintain moisture and acidity in the soil.
- Cutting back spent flower heads to tidy the plant and encourage healthy growth.
Uses
Ornamental:
Eriophorum russeoleum is an excellent addition to bog gardens, wetlands, and water features. Its fluffy, cotton-like flower heads add texture and movement to these environments, and its compact size makes it perfect for planting along the edges of ponds or streams.
Naturalized Planting:
This plant is ideal for naturalizing in damp, acidic areas where it can spread and form clumps, offering a soft, ethereal texture to the landscape.
Wildlife Gardens:
The fluffy flowers attract pollinators such as bees, and its dense foliage can provide shelter for small insects, making it a good choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Ecological Value
Eriophorum russeoleum supports pollinators by providing nectar and pollen through its cotton-like flower heads. Its presence in wetland areas also helps stabilize the soil, preventing erosion along boggy, marshy sites.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistently moist or waterlogged soil is essential for healthy growth. Avoid planting in dry areas where the soil is prone to drying out.
- Soil Requirements: The plant thrives in acidic soils. It may struggle in neutral or alkaline soils, so consider adding peat or organic matter to improve soil conditions in non-acidic environments.
- Spread: This species can spread in ideal conditions, so it may require occasional management to prevent it from overtaking smaller garden spaces.

Its fluffy flower heads and attractive green foliage make it a standout in water features, pond edges, and naturalized plantings. With its low-maintenance care requirements and ability to thrive in moist, acidic conditions, it is an excellent addition to any garden with damp, shaded areas.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
