Key Points
Eupatorium cannabinum, commonly known as Hemp Agrimony or Dutch Agrimony, is a hardy, perennial herb native to Europe and parts of Asia. It is known for its tall, robust growth, clusters of pink or purple flowers, and its ability to thrive in damp, well-drained soils, making it a great addition to wildflower gardens, wetlands, or pond edges.
Description
Eupatorium cannabinum grows to a height of 1–1.5 meters (3–5 feet) with a spread of 45–60 cm (18–24 inches). The plant forms upright stems with opposite, lance-shaped, serrated leaves that are green and slightly aromatic. The leaves are narrow, with a hemp-like appearance, which is why the plant is named "Hemp Agrimony."
In late summer to early autumn (July to September), Eupatorium cannabinum produces dense, flat-topped clusters of small, tubular, pink or purple flowers. These flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies, making it an excellent plant for pollinator gardens.
Growing Conditions
Eupatorium cannabinum thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It grows best in damp environments such as near ponds, streams, wetlands, or meadows. The plant is tolerant of a range of soil types but prefers fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soils.
It is hardy in the UK and grows well in temperate climates, tolerating moderate frost in winter. However, it requires consistent moisture to maintain healthy growth, making it suitable for gardens that can provide damp conditions throughout the growing season.
Propagation and Care
Eupatorium cannabinum can be propagated by seed, division, or cuttings:
- Seed: Sow seeds in spring or early autumn in a seed tray, covering lightly with soil. Keep the soil consistently moist during the germination period.
- Division: In early spring or autumn, carefully divide mature clumps into smaller sections. Ensure each section has healthy roots and shoots before replanting.
- Cuttings: Take softwood cuttings in early summer and root them in a moist, well-drained medium.
Routine care includes:
- Regular watering, especially during dry periods, to maintain the plant’s preferred moist conditions.
- Deadheading spent flowers to encourage longer blooming and prevent self-seeding.
- Cutting back the plant after flowering to maintain its appearance and encourage new growth for the following season.
Uses
Ornamental:
Eupatorium cannabinum is ideal for adding height and texture to wildflower meadows, wetland gardens, and along pond edges. Its tall stature and attractive pink or purple flowers make it an excellent focal point for moist garden areas.
Pollinator Gardens:
The plant’s flowers attract a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and moths. It is a valuable addition to gardens designed to support pollinator populations.
Medicinal Use:
Historically, Hemp Agrimony was used in traditional herbal medicine for its purported digestive and anti-inflammatory properties. However, it is important to consult a qualified herbalist or healthcare provider before using any plant medicinally.
Ecological Value
Eupatorium cannabinum supports pollinators by providing nectar and pollen. It also offers shelter for insects and small wildlife. Its dense foliage and flowers help to increase biodiversity in garden ecosystems, especially in areas with moist, nutrient-rich soil.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Regular moisture is essential, particularly during dry spells. This plant will not thrive in dry soil.
- Spread: Eupatorium cannabinum can spread vigorously in ideal conditions, so occasional division may be needed to control its size and prevent it from overcrowding other plants.
- Toxicity: While generally safe, it is best to exercise caution and ensure the plant is planted in areas that are not frequently accessed by pets or children, as some species of Eupatorium can be toxic if ingested.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
