Key Points
Filipendula rubra 'Venusta Magnifica', commonly known as Queen of the Prairie, is a stunning perennial plant admired for its striking, large, pink flower clusters and graceful, feathery foliage. Native to North America, this cultivar of Filipendula rubra is especially valued for its beauty and ability to thrive in moist, sunny environments, making it an excellent choice for gardens, meadows, or along the edges of ponds and streams.
Description
Filipendula rubra 'Venusta Magnifica' grows to a height of 1.2–1.8 meters (4–6 feet) with a spread of 90–120 cm (36–48 inches). The plant has large, pinnate leaves that are deeply divided, creating a soft, fern-like texture throughout the growing season.
In mid to late summer (July to August), it produces large, pyramid-shaped clusters of pink flowers that are fluffy and feathery, resembling plumes. These blooms are held above the foliage on tall, slender stems, making a striking contrast against the rich green leaves. The flowers attract pollinators, including bees and butterflies, enhancing the biodiversity of the garden.
Growing Conditions
Filipendula rubra 'Venusta Magnifica' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is particularly suited to damp, fertile soil and performs best in areas with consistent moisture, such as near ponds, streams, or wet meadows.
It is hardy in the UK and grows well in temperate climates, tolerating some frost but thriving best in regions with mild, moist conditions. It will not do well in dry soil, making it a perfect plant for boggy or wetland garden areas.
Propagation and Care
Filipendula rubra 'Venusta Magnifica' is propagated by division or seed:
- Division: In early spring or autumn, divide established plants by digging up the root clump and splitting it into smaller sections. Replant each division in well-prepared, moist soil.
- Seed: Sow seeds in early spring or late autumn in a cold frame or greenhouse. Germination may take time, and plants grown from seed will take a couple of years to reach full size and bloom.
Routine care includes:
- Regular watering, particularly in dry spells, to maintain the plant's preferred moist conditions.
- Deadheading spent flowers to prevent seed formation and encourage continuous blooming.
- Cutting back the plant in autumn or early spring to remove dead foliage and encourage fresh growth.
Uses
Ornamental:
Filipendula rubra 'Venusta Magnifica' is an outstanding addition to perennial borders, wildflower meadows, or damp garden areas. Its tall, upright growth and large, feathery pink flowers make it a dramatic focal point in the landscape. It pairs well with other moisture-loving plants such as Astilbe, Ligularia, and other varieties of Filipendula.
Pollinator Gardens:
The plant’s pink, feathery flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Naturalized Planting:
This plant is ideal for naturalizing in moist garden areas, particularly in wetland or water garden settings where it can thrive and form clumps.
Ecological Value
Filipendula rubra 'Venusta Magnifica' is a valuable addition to pollinator gardens, providing nectar for bees and butterflies. The plant also contributes to soil health by thriving in moist, nutrient-rich environments and offering shelter for small insects and wildlife.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistently moist soil is essential for optimal growth. The plant prefers wet or boggy soil and will struggle in dry conditions.
- Size Management: Due to its large size, Filipendula rubra 'Venusta Magnifica' may need occasional division to prevent overcrowding in smaller garden spaces.
- Maintenance: This plant requires little maintenance beyond watering, occasional deadheading, and periodic division to maintain vigour.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
