Key Points
Filipendula ulmaria, commonly known as Meadowsweet, is a versatile and aromatic perennial that thrives in moist, wildflower meadows, damp woodlands, and along riverbanks. Known for its feathery white flower clusters and sweet fragrance, it has been used historically in herbal medicine and continues to be a valued ornamental plant in gardens.
Description
Filipendula ulmaria grows to a height of 90–150 cm (3–5 feet) with a spread of 45–60 cm (18–24 inches). It forms large clumps of deeply lobed, bright green leaves that are arranged in a pinnate pattern, giving the plant a fern-like appearance.
In late spring to early summer (June to July), the plant produces large, showy clusters of tiny, star-shaped white flowers arranged in panicles. These flowers have a strong, sweet fragrance, which is why the plant is often associated with its use in perfumes and medicinal preparations. The flowers also attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, and other insects, making it a great addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.
Growing Conditions
Filipendula ulmaria thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It grows best in damp environments such as wet meadows, boggy areas, and along the edges of ponds or streams. Meadowsweet is adaptable but does best in locations with consistent moisture.
Hardy in the UK, this plant is well-suited for temperate climates and can tolerate moderate frost. It prefers cool, moist conditions and will not do well in dry, arid soil.
Propagation and Care
Filipendula ulmaria is propagated by seed, division, or cuttings:
- Seed: Sow seeds in early spring or late autumn. Seeds can be sown in pots or directly in the ground in a well-drained, moist soil. However, growing from seed can be slow, and it may take a couple of seasons for the plant to mature fully.
- Division: In early spring or autumn, lift established clumps and divide them into smaller sections. Replant each division in moist, prepared soil.
- Cuttings: Take cuttings from healthy, non-flowering stems in early summer and root them in moist, well-drained compost.
Routine care includes:
- Watering regularly to ensure that the soil stays consistently moist, particularly during dry spells.
- Deadheading spent flowers to promote tidiness and prevent excessive self-seeding.
- Cutting back foliage in late autumn to tidy up the plant and help it regrow in the spring.
Uses
Ornamental:
Filipendula ulmaria is an attractive addition to perennial borders, wildflower meadows, and damp garden areas. Its tall, elegant form and fragrant flowers make it a striking focal point in any garden designed for moisture-loving plants.
Herbal and Medicinal:
Historically, Meadowsweet has been used in herbal medicine to treat a variety of ailments, including as a pain reliever (due to its salicylic acid content) and an anti-inflammatory. It is also used for its calming properties in teas and extracts. Always consult a healthcare professional before using plants medicinally.
Pollinator Gardens:
The plant’s fragrant flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
Ecological Value
Filipendula ulmaria is a vital plant for pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies, as it provides a rich nectar source. Its dense foliage offers shelter for small insects, and the plant contributes to the biodiversity of garden ecosystems, especially in damp or wetland settings.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is essential for the plant to thrive. It will not perform well in dry soil and is best suited for damp or wet garden areas.
- Spread: Filipendula ulmaria can spread by rhizomes and may naturalize in suitable conditions. Regular division helps manage its growth and prevents overcrowding in garden spaces.
- Toxicity: While generally considered safe, it should be noted that the plant contains salicylates, so it may have an effect on those with aspirin sensitivities.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
