Key Points
Geranium palustre, commonly known as Marsh Cranesbill, is a perennial plant native to damp, wetland environments, such as marshes, streambanks, and other moist habitats. Known for its charming flowers and tolerance for wet conditions, it is an excellent choice for naturalized gardens, water features, or boggy garden areas.
Description
Geranium palustre grows to a height of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) with a spread of 30–45 cm (12–18 inches). The plant features rounded, deeply lobed green leaves, which provide a rich, textured backdrop for its attractive flowers.
In late spring to early summer (May to June), Marsh Cranesbill produces delicate, pale to deep pink or purple flowers. Each flower is typically 5-petaled, with striking veins that give them a characteristic, veined appearance. These flowers grow in loose clusters above the foliage, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Growing Conditions
Geranium palustre thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is particularly suited for damp, boggy areas or alongside water features like ponds, streams, or wetland gardens. The plant can tolerate a variety of soil types but does best in moist, fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
It is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and will thrive in damp gardens, making it ideal for rain gardens, boggy woodland settings, or pond edges.
Propagation and Care
Geranium palustre can be propagated by seed, division, or softwood cuttings:
- Seed: Sow seeds in early spring or late autumn in moist, well-drained soil. It may take some time for the plant to flower when grown from seed.
- Division: Divide established clumps in spring or autumn, making sure each section has roots and shoots. Replant immediately in moist soil.
- Cuttings: Take softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer and root them in a damp, well-drained medium.
Routine care includes:
- Regular watering to maintain consistent moisture, particularly during dry spells.
- Deadheading spent flowers to encourage tidiness and prolong flowering.
- Cutting back the plant after flowering to maintain its appearance and allow for fresh growth.
Uses
Ornamental:
Geranium palustre is perfect for adding delicate colour and texture to garden borders, wetland gardens, and along pond edges. It pairs beautifully with other moisture-loving plants, such as Astilbe, Iris, and Lobelia.
Naturalized Planting:
This plant is ideal for naturalizing in damp, shaded, or semi-wet areas. It can create lovely ground cover or form clusters along water features, contributing to a natural, meadow-like feel in garden settings.
Pollinator Gardens:
The flowers of Marsh Cranesbill attract pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, making it an excellent addition to gardens designed to support biodiversity and pollinator populations.
Ecological Value
Geranium palustre helps support local pollinators, providing nectar and pollen during its blooming period. Its dense foliage also provides shelter for small insects and other wildlife, contributing to a diverse and healthy garden ecosystem.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Regular moisture is crucial for this plant to thrive. It will not do well in dry conditions and is best suited for wet or boggy environments.
- Light Requirements: It tolerates partial shade, but it will bloom best in full sun or light shade.
- Spread: While not invasive, Geranium palustre can spread by self-seeding in ideal conditions, so it may require occasional management if you want to control its growth.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
