Gunnera manicata (Giant Rhubarb)
Gunnera manicata, commonly known as Giant Rhubarb, is a spectacular architectural perennial known for its enormous leaves and dramatic presence. Perfect for large gardens, water features, and boggy areas, this moisture-loving plant creates a bold and exotic display.
Description
- Height: 200–250 cm (6.5–8 feet)
- Spread: 250–400 cm (8–13 feet)
- Foliage: The enormous, deeply lobed, green leaves can grow up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) across. The leaves are rough in texture and supported by thick, spiny stems.
- Flowers: In late spring to early summer (May to July), Gunnera manicata produces large, cone-shaped flower spikes up to 1 meter (3 feet) tall. The flowers are greenish-red and are followed by small, reddish fruits.
- Growth Habit: Forms a clump of massive leaves that radiate outwards, creating a striking architectural feature.
Growing Conditions
Gunnera manicata thrives in consistently moist soils and is best suited for large gardens or naturalized water-rich environments.
- Soil: Prefers rich, fertile, well-drained soil that retains moisture. It thrives in boggy or damp areas, including pond edges and streamsides.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil. Avoid planting in dry areas or where soil may dry out during the growing season.
- Light: Grows best in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, provide partial shade to protect the leaves from scorching.
This plant is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, but may require winter protection in colder regions.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Propagate by dividing the rhizomes in early spring or autumn. Ensure each division has a growing bud and some roots attached.
- Seed: Sow seeds in early spring in a moist, well-drained medium. Germination can be slow and requires warmth and consistent moisture.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells.
- Apply a thick mulch of organic matter in autumn to protect the crown and rhizomes from frost.
- Cut back old leaves in autumn and use them to cover the crown for additional winter protection.
- Feed with a balanced fertilizer in spring to encourage vigorous growth.
Uses
- Architectural Planting: Gunnera manicata is ideal as a focal point in large gardens, where its massive leaves create a dramatic, tropical effect.
- Water Gardens: Thrives near ponds, streams, or bog gardens, where it adds bold structure and texture.
- Naturalized Planting: Perfect for naturalizing in wet or semi-shaded areas, especially in large landscapes.
Ecological Value
- Wildlife Shelter: The large leaves provide shade and shelter for insects and small animals.
- Erosion Control: The fibrous roots stabilize soil in damp or waterlogged areas, reducing erosion.
Considerations
- Size Requirements: Due to its massive size, Gunnera manicata requires plenty of space to grow and is unsuitable for small gardens.
- Moisture Needs: Consistently moist soil is essential for healthy growth. Dry conditions can cause the leaves to wilt or die back prematurely.
- Frost Protection: Although hardy, the plant benefits from winter protection in colder climates. Use cut-back leaves or mulch to protect the crown from frost.
- Toxicity: While not highly toxic, care should be taken when handling the spiny stems and rough leaves, which may cause skin irritation.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
