Key Points
Hosta 'Emerald Tiara'
Hosta 'Emerald Tiara' is a compact and attractive perennial, part of the Tiara series, known for its vibrant, variegated foliage. This low-maintenance plant is perfect for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and containers, adding a pop of color and texture to any space.
Description
- Height: 20–30 cm (8–12 inches)
- Spread: 30–45 cm (12–18 inches)
- Foliage: The leaves are bright green with a striking, golden-yellow margin. The foliage is heart-shaped and slightly wavy, creating a bold contrast in shaded areas.
- Flowers: In midsummer (July to August), 'Emerald Tiara' produces pale lavender to light purple bell-shaped flowers on slender, upright scapes. The flowers attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds.
- Growth Habit: Forms a compact, mounding clump of foliage that spreads gradually, making it an excellent ground cover.
Growing Conditions
Hosta 'Emerald Tiara' thrives in shaded or partially shaded locations with consistently moist soil.
- Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. It tolerates a range of soil types, from loam to clay, as long as it retains moisture.
- Water: Requires consistent moisture, particularly during the growing season. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
- Light: Grows best in partial to full shade. Morning sun is acceptable, but harsh afternoon sun may scorch the leaves and fade the vibrant margins.
This hosta is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–5 years in early spring or autumn. Carefully dig up the plant, separate the clumps, and replant them in well-prepared soil.
- Seed: While propagation by seed is possible, it is not recommended for 'Emerald Tiara' as seedlings may not retain the parent plant's characteristics.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture.
- Mulch annually with organic matter to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil.
- Remove dead or damaged leaves as needed to maintain a tidy appearance.
- Watch for slugs and snails, which can damage the leaves. Use organic or non-toxic deterrents if necessary.
Uses
- Ground Cover: The dense foliage and low growth habit make it ideal for covering shaded areas under trees or shrubs.
- Border Edging: Perfect for edging shaded pathways or planting in front of taller perennials.
- Containers: Thrives in containers, where its bold foliage can be showcased on patios or balconies.
- Woodland Gardens: Combines beautifully with other shade-loving plants like ferns, Astilbes, and Heucheras for a lush, textured display.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The lavender flowers attract bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.
- Wildlife Habitat: The dense foliage provides shelter for small garden creatures.
Considerations
- Pests: Slugs and snails are the primary concern for hostas. Regular monitoring and using deterrents can help protect the plant.
- Moisture Needs: Consistently moist soil is essential for healthy growth. Avoid planting in overly dry or sandy soils.
- Light Sensitivity: Protect the plant from intense afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorching and fading of the golden margins.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
