Key Points
Hosta 'Little Tuft' is a charming, compact cultivar of the Hosta species, known for its small size and dense, tufted foliage. It is perfect for smaller gardens, containers, or as an edging plant in shady garden areas. This variety stands out for its attractive, lush leaves and its ability to thrive in shady, moisture-rich environments.
Description
Hosta 'Little Tuft' grows to a height of 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) with a spread of 30–45 cm (12–18 inches). It features small, round to heart-shaped leaves that are a fresh green color. The foliage is dense and forms a tight, tufted clump, making it an excellent choice for adding texture and color to shaded garden spaces.
In mid to late summer (June to July), Hosta 'Little Tuft' produces tall flower spikes that rise above the foliage, bearing pale lavender or light purple bell-shaped flowers. The flowers are delicate and attractive to pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, but the plant is most prized for its unique foliage.
Growing Conditions
Hosta 'Little Tuft' thrives in full shade to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Like most Hostas, it grows best in shaded garden areas, under trees, or in woodland settings, where it can receive indirect light.
It performs well in slightly acidic to neutral soil and is adaptable to a range of soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils, as long as they retain moisture. This plant does not tolerate drought, so consistent moisture is necessary.
Hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, Hosta 'Little Tuft' is frost-tolerant and will return year after year.
Propagation and Care
Hosta 'Little Tuft' can be propagated by division or by offsets:
- Division: In early spring or autumn, carefully lift the plant and divide the clump by separating the roots into smaller sections. Each section should have roots and shoots. Replant immediately in moist, well-prepared soil.
- Offsets: As the plant matures, it may produce offsets or baby plants around its base, which can be separated and replanted.
Routine care includes:
- Regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot or dry spells.
- Applying mulch around the base to help retain moisture and protect the roots from extreme temperatures.
- Removing spent flowers to maintain the plant’s tidy appearance and encourage fresh growth.
- Cutting back dead foliage in late autumn to tidy up the plant and prepare it for winter dormancy.
Uses
Ornamental:
Hosta 'Little Tuft' is perfect for shaded garden borders, woodland gardens, or as an underplanting for trees and shrubs. Its compact size and dense foliage make it ideal for small spaces where a bold, textural effect is needed.
Container Planting:
Due to its small size, Hosta 'Little Tuft' is well-suited for container planting. It can be used in patios, decks, or balconies, where it will thrive in shaded or partially shaded locations.
Ground Cover:
This Hosta works well as a low-maintenance ground cover in shaded areas, helping to fill in spaces and suppress weeds with its lush, compact foliage.
Ecological Value
Hosta 'Little Tuft' attracts pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, with its fragrant flowers. It also provides shelter for small insects and wildlife in shaded areas, contributing to the overall biodiversity of garden ecosystems.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Regular moisture is crucial for Hosta 'Little Tuft'. Ensure the soil remains moist, particularly during dry spells, as Hostas are sensitive to drought.
- Light Preferences: While it tolerates partial shade, this plant performs best in full shade or areas with indirect light to prevent leaf scorch.
- Slug and Snail Protection: Hostas are prone to damage from slugs and snails. Regular checks and the use of slug control methods can help prevent significant damage.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
