Key Points
Hypericum polyphyllum 'Grandiflorum', commonly known as Large-Flowered St. John's Wort, is a low-growing, semi-evergreen perennial or subshrub that is prized for its vibrant yellow flowers and drought-tolerant nature. It is an excellent choice for rock gardens, borders, and sunny slopes, offering long-lasting blooms and minimal maintenance.
Description
Hypericum polyphyllum 'Grandiflorum' grows to a height of 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) with a spread of 45–60 cm (18–24 inches). It forms a compact, mounded habit with small, blue-green, ovate leaves that are semi-evergreen in milder climates.
In summer (June to August), the plant produces large, bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers measuring up to 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter. The flowers feature prominent, fluffy stamens that add texture and a cheerful appearance to the garden. These blooms are attractive to pollinators, particularly bees.
Growing Conditions
Hypericum polyphyllum 'Grandiflorum' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, sandy, or rocky soil. It is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for xeriscaping or gardens with poor, dry soil.
It is hardy in the UK and other temperate climates, tolerating moderate frost. While it prefers a sunny location for optimal flowering, it can tolerate some light shade.
Propagation and Care
Hypericum polyphyllum 'Grandiflorum' can be propagated by seed, cuttings, or division:
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn or early spring in well-drained soil. Germination can be slow but reliable under the right conditions.
- Cuttings: Take softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings in late spring or early summer and root them in moist, sandy compost.
- Division: Divide mature plants in early spring or autumn, ensuring each section has healthy roots and shoots. Replant immediately in suitable soil.
Routine care includes:
- Watering sparingly, as the plant is drought-tolerant and does not like overly wet soil.
- Deadheading spent flowers to prolong the blooming period and maintain a tidy appearance.
- Cutting back stems lightly in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth and maintain the plant’s compact form.
Uses
Ornamental:
This variety is perfect for rock gardens, sunny borders, or as ground cover on slopes and banks. Its compact habit and bright yellow flowers make it a cheerful addition to any garden.

Hypericum polyphyllum 'Grandiflorum' is ideal for stabilizing slopes or poor soils, thanks to its spreading habit and drought tolerance.
Pollinator Gardens:

Ecological Value
The bright flowers of Hypericum polyphyllum 'Grandiflorum' provide a valuable nectar source for pollinators, such as bees and butterflies. Its ability to grow in poor soils also helps improve biodiversity in less hospitable garden environments.
Considerations
- Drainage: This plant requires excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Avoid planting it in heavy, waterlogged soils.
- Pruning: Light pruning in late winter or early spring will help maintain its shape and encourage vigorous growth.
- Spreading Habit: While not invasive, the plant can spread to fill gaps in sunny, well-drained areas, making it an excellent ground cover option.

Hypericum polyphyllum 'Grandiflorum' is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant perennial that brings vibrant yellow blooms to sunny, well-drained gardens. Perfect for rock gardens, borders, and slopes, its compact growth habit and cheerful flowers make it a versatile and rewarding addition to any landscape. Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
