Growing Conditions
Iris ensata 'Dinner Plate Ice Cream' thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires consistently moist, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It performs exceptionally well in water-rich environments, such as pond edges, bog gardens, or shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep.
- Soil: Rich, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure.
- Water: Ensure consistent moisture, particularly during the growing and blooming seasons. Avoid dry or overly alkaline soils, which can hinder growth.

Propagation and Care

-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to ensure consistent soil moisture.
- Mulch annually to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil fertility.
- Cut back old foliage in late autumn to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
- Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Uses
- Ornamental: The large, creamy, and pastel-toned flowers of Iris ensata 'Dinner Plate Ice Cream' make it a show-stopping focal point in water gardens, bog gardens, and pond edges.
- Naturalized Planting: This iris is perfect for naturalizing in damp areas, creating a serene and elegant display in rain gardens and streamsides.

Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, providing an important nectar source during the blooming season.
- Erosion Control: The dense root system stabilizes soil in wet areas, reducing erosion and contributing to improved water quality.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is essential for optimal growth and blooming. Keep the soil consistently wet during the growing season.
- Light Requirements: Full sun is best for maximum flowering, though partial shade is suitable in hot climates.
- Division: Regular division every few years prevents overcrowding and maintains plant health and vigor.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
