This iris is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or late summer. Replant the rhizomes in freshly prepared, moist soil.
- Seed: While possible, propagation from seed is slow and rarely used for cultivars like 'Eden's Paintbrush' as seedlings may not retain the parent plant's characteristics.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain moist conditions, especially during dry periods.
- Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring and again after flowering to promote healthy growth and blooms.
- Remove spent flower stems to tidy the plant and encourage prolonged blooming.
- Cut back foliage to ground level in late autumn to prepare for winter dormancy.
Uses
- Water Gardens: Perfect for planting near ponds, streams, or in boggy areas where its love for moisture can be fully appreciated.
- Borders: Adds dramatic color and height to damp or moisture-retentive borders.
- Naturalized Planting: Suitable for naturalizing in wetland areas or along water margins.
- Cut Flowers: The stunning, painterly blooms are ideal for fresh floral arrangements.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity.
- Erosion Control: The dense root system helps stabilize soil in wet or sloped areas, reducing erosion and improving water quality.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Requires consistently moist soil for healthy growth and flowering. Avoid planting in dry or well-drained areas.
- Space Requirements: Ensure adequate space for the plant's upright growth and spreading rhizomes.
- Winter Dormancy: While hardy, a layer of mulch can help protect the rhizomes in areas with severe winters.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
