Description
- Height: 90–120 cm (36–48 inches)

The blooms appear in mid to late summer (June to July), rising above the foliage on slender stems.
- Foliage: Narrow, sword-shaped green leaves form a dense clump, providing vertical interest even when the plant is not in bloom.
Growing Conditions
Iris ensata 'Freckled Geisha' thrives in consistently moist to wet conditions and prefers sunny locations.
- Soil: Prefers rich, acidic to neutral soil with good moisture retention. It thrives in loamy or clay soils, especially those enriched with organic matter.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil or shallow standing water (up to 10 cm / 4 inches deep) during the growing season. Perfect for planting near ponds, streams, or in bog gardens.
- Light: Grows best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Full sun ensures optimal flowering.
This iris is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or late summer. Dig up the rhizomes, separate them, and replant in freshly prepared soil.
- Seed: Propagation by seed is possible but slow and less common.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain moist conditions, especially in drier periods.
- Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring and again after flowering to promote healthy growth and blooms.
- Remove spent flower stems to tidy the plant and encourage prolonged blooming.
- Cut back foliage to ground level in late autumn to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
Uses
- Water Gardens: Thrives in wet conditions, making it ideal for planting near ponds, streams, or in boggy areas.
- Borders: Adds elegance and color to moist or damp borders.
- Naturalized Planting: Suitable for naturalizing in wetland areas or along water margins.
- Cut Flowers: The large, artistic blooms make a stunning addition to fresh floral arrangements.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity during the summer months.
- Erosion Control: The dense root system helps stabilize soil in wet areas, reducing erosion.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Requires consistently moist soil. Dry conditions can negatively impact flowering and overall health.
- Space Requirements: Ensure adequate space for the plant's upright growth habit and spreading rhizomes.
- Winter Dormancy: While hardy, the plant may require a protective mulch layer in regions with severe winters.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
