This water-loving iris is perfect for moist or boggy areas, pond edges, or rain gardens, where it can create a dramatic and elegant display.
Description
Iris ensata 'Greywoods Catrina' grows to a height of 90–120 cm (36–48 inches) with a spread of 45–60 cm (18–24 inches). Its narrow, sword-like green leaves form a dense clump that adds texture and vertical interest to the garden.

The blooms are a deep, velvety purple with a golden-yellow signal at the center, adding contrast and drawing the eye. The slightly ruffled petals enhance the elegant appearance of the flowers, making them a standout feature in any garden.
Growing Conditions
Iris ensata 'Greywoods Catrina' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It is particularly well-suited for wet or boggy areas, pond edges, or shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep.
For best results:
- Amend the soil with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve fertility and moisture retention.
- Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during the growing and blooming seasons.
- Avoid planting in dry or overly alkaline soils, as these conditions may reduce growth and flowering.
Hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, 'Greywoods Catrina' is frost-tolerant and reliably returns year after year.
Propagation and Care
Iris ensata 'Greywoods Catrina' is propagated by division or seed:
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in late summer or early autumn after flowering. Replant the divisions in moist, well-prepared soil to maintain plant vigor.
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn or early spring in a damp, well-drained growing medium. Note that seed propagation is slower and less common than division.
Routine care includes:
- Regular watering to ensure the soil remains consistently moist.
- Applying mulch annually to retain moisture, improve soil fertility, and suppress weeds.
- Cutting back old foliage in late autumn to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
- Fertilizing in early spring with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
