Description
Iris ensata 'Harlequinesque' grows to a height of 90–120 cm (36–48 inches) with a spread of 45–60 cm (18–24 inches). The plant features narrow, sword-like green leaves that form a dense clump, adding vertical structure and a lush texture to the garden.

The slightly ruffled petals enhance the flower’s elegant appearance, making it a showpiece in any landscape.
Growing Conditions
Iris ensata 'Harlequinesque' thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires consistently moist, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It is especially suited for boggy areas, pond edges, or shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep.
For best results:
- Plant in soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve fertility and moisture retention.
- Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during the growing and blooming seasons.
- Avoid planting in dry or overly alkaline soils, as these conditions may hinder growth and flowering.
This cultivar is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well, reliably returning each year.
Propagation and Care
Iris ensata 'Harlequinesque' is propagated by division or seed:
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in late summer or early autumn after flowering. Replant the divisions in moist, well-prepared soil to maintain plant vigor.
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn or early spring in a damp, well-drained growing medium. While slower, seed propagation is an option for those with patience.
Routine care includes:
- Regular watering to ensure the soil remains consistently moist.
- Mulching annually to retain soil moisture, improve fertility, and suppress weeds.
- Cutting back old foliage in late autumn to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
- Fertilizing in early spring with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
