Description
Iris ensata 'Loyalty' grows to a height of 90–120 cm (36–48 inches) with a spread of 45–60 cm (18–24 inches). The plant features upright, sword-like green leaves that provide a lush and structured backdrop to the stunning flowers.
In midsummer (June to July), 'Loyalty' produces large, velvety flowers measuring up to 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in diameter. The blooms are a deep, rich purple or violet, with a bright yellow signal at the center of each petal, adding contrast and depth. The slightly ruffled petals enhance the dramatic appearance of this cultivar, making it a standout feature in any garden.
Growing Conditions
Iris ensata 'Loyalty' thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires consistently moist, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It is particularly well-suited for wet or boggy areas, pond edges, or shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep.
For optimal growth:
- Plant in soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure.
- Maintain consistent moisture, especially during the growing and blooming seasons.
- Avoid planting in dry or overly alkaline soils, as these conditions can hinder growth and flowering.
Hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, 'Loyalty' is frost-tolerant and reliably returns each year.
Propagation and Care
Iris ensata 'Loyalty' is propagated by division or seed:
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in late summer or early autumn after flowering. Replant the divisions in moist, well-prepared soil to maintain vigor.
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn or early spring in a damp, well-drained medium. While slower, seed propagation is possible for those with patience.
Routine care includes:
- Regular watering to ensure the soil remains consistently moist.
- Mulching annually to retain moisture, improve soil fertility, and suppress weeds.
- Cutting back old foliage in late autumn to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
- Fertilizing in early spring with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Iris ensata 'Loyalty' is perfect for adding elegance and bold color to water gardens, pond edges, and boggy areas. Its tall, vibrant flowers and lush foliage make it a stunning focal point in moist garden spaces.

This cultivar is excellent for naturalizing in wet or semi-shaded areas, where it can create a serene and dramatic display.

Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is essential for this cultivar to thrive. It performs best in wet, boggy conditions and does not tolerate dry soil.
- Light Requirements: Full sun is ideal for maximum flowering, but the plant will tolerate partial shade, especially in warmer climates.
- Division: Regular division every few years prevents overcrowding and maintains plant vigor.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
