The flowers bloom in mid to late summer (June to July), rising gracefully above the foliage.

Growing Conditions
Iris kaempferi 'Dark Blue' thrives in consistently moist to wet environments and prefers sunny locations.
- Soil: Prefers rich, acidic to neutral soil with good moisture retention. Loamy or clay soils enriched with organic matter are best.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil or shallow standing water (up to 10 cm / 4 inches deep) during the growing season.
- Light: Grows best in full sun but tolerates partial shade, particularly in warmer regions. Full sun ensures the richest color and optimal flowering.
This iris is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or late summer to maintain vigor and encourage flowering. Replant the divisions in freshly prepared, moist soil.
- Seed: Propagation by seed is possible but not ideal for cultivars, as seedlings may not retain the unique characteristics of the parent plant.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to ensure consistently moist conditions, especially during dry spells.
- Fertilize in early spring and again after flowering with a balanced fertilizer to encourage strong growth and vibrant blooms.
- Remove spent flowers to keep the plant tidy and prolong the blooming period.
- Cut back foliage to ground level in late autumn to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
Uses
- Water Gardens: Thrives in wet conditions, making it perfect for planting near ponds, streams, or in boggy areas.
- Borders: Adds bold color and height to damp or moisture-retentive borders, creating an elegant focal point.
- Naturalized Planting: Ideal for naturalizing in wetland areas or along water margins, creating a peaceful and harmonious display.
- Cut Flowers: The deep blue blooms make a stunning addition to fresh floral arrangements, adding richness and sophistication.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity during the blooming season.
- Erosion Control: The dense root system helps stabilize soil in wet or sloped areas, reducing erosion and improving water quality.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Requires consistently moist or wet soil for healthy growth and flowering. Avoid planting in dry or well-drained areas.
- Space Requirements: Ensure adequate space for the plant’s upright growth and spreading rhizomes.
- Winter Protection: Though hardy, a layer of mulch around the base in colder climates can help protect rhizomes from harsh winters.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
