Key Points
Iris setosa 'Baby Blue'
Iris setosa 'Baby Blue', a charming dwarf cultivar of the Arctic Iris, is treasured for its delicate, pastel blooms and compact size. This hardy and adaptable perennial is well-suited for rock gardens, water garden edges, or mixed perennial borders, especially in cooler climates.
Description
- Height: 30–45 cm (12–18 inches)
- Spread: 30–45 cm (12–18 inches)
- Flowers: The blooms of 'Baby Blue' are a soft, powdery blue with intricate darker blue veins and a yellow or white signal in the center of each petal. Measuring about 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) across, the flowers appear delicate yet striking. Blooming occurs in late spring to early summer (May to June), with the blooms held gracefully above the foliage on slender stems.
- Foliage: Narrow, grass-like green leaves form a compact, upright clump, providing an attractive backdrop to the flowers and maintaining interest even after the blooms fade.
Growing Conditions
Iris setosa 'Baby Blue' is highly adaptable and thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist soil but is more tolerant of drier conditions than other irises, making it versatile for various garden settings.
- Soil: Performs best in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil enriched with organic matter.
- Water: Although it tolerates brief periods of dryness, it prefers consistently moist conditions, particularly during the growing and blooming season. It is also suitable for planting near water features or in boggy areas.
- Light: Full sun promotes the best flowering, but the plant can tolerate partial shade, particularly in hotter climates.
This cultivar is hardy in cooler climates, including the UK, and is frost-tolerant, making it ideal for temperate and northern gardens.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or late summer. Replant the divisions in prepared soil to maintain vigor and encourage fresh growth.
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn or early spring. While slower, seed propagation is an option for those interested in growing from scratch.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to maintain consistent soil moisture.
- Apply a layer of mulch annually to retain soil moisture, improve fertility, and suppress weeds.
- Deadhead spent blooms to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage new flowers.
- Cut back foliage in late autumn to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
Uses
- Ornamental: 'Baby Blue' is ideal for adding soft, pastel hues to rock gardens, pond edges, and mixed borders, offering elegance and charm in a compact form.
- Naturalized Planting: This iris thrives in naturalized settings such as damp meadows, streamsides, or woodland edges, creating a lush and serene display.
- Container Planting: Due to its smaller size, 'Baby Blue' is well-suited for container planting, where it can be showcased on patios or balconies.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, providing a valuable nectar source during the blooming season.
- Erosion Control: The dense foliage and root system help stabilize soil in wet areas, reducing erosion and improving water quality.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: While more tolerant of drier conditions than other water-loving irises, consistent moisture is preferred for optimal growth and flowering.
- Light Requirements: Full sun ensures the best flowering, but partial shade is acceptable, particularly in warmer regions.
- Division: Regular division every few years helps prevent overcrowding and maintains the health and vigor of the plant.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
