Iris sibirica 'White' (Siberian Flag Iris)
Iris sibirica 'White', commonly referred to as Siberian Flag, is a stunning and graceful perennial known for its elegant white blooms and lush, arching foliage. This hardy, moisture-loving plant is perfect for adding purity and sophistication to water gardens, damp borders, and naturalized areas.
Description
- Height: 80–100 cm (32–40 inches)
- Spread: 45–60 cm (18–24 inches)
- Flowers: The blooms of 'White' are a luminous, pure white, occasionally accented with a subtle yellow or green signal at the base of the falls (outer petals). The flowers are slightly smaller than those of Japanese irises, measuring 7–10 cm (3–4 inches) across. Blooming occurs in late spring to early summer (May to June), creating a serene and elegant display.
- Foliage: The narrow, grass-like green leaves form dense, arching clumps, providing vertical interest and structure even after the flowering period.
Growing Conditions
Iris sibirica 'White' thrives in a range of garden settings, particularly in moist or damp areas.
- Soil: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. Loamy or clay soils are ideal, but it can tolerate sandy soils if moisture is consistent.
- Water: Requires regular watering during the growing season. It thrives in damp or boggy areas and tolerates occasional standing water but prefers soil that is consistently moist rather than waterlogged.
- Light: Grows best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun promotes abundant flowering, but partial shade is beneficial in warmer climates.
This iris is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost exceptionally well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or late summer to maintain plant vigor and encourage blooming. Replant divisions in freshly prepared soil.
- Seed: Propagation by seed is possible but slow. Sow seeds in autumn in a cold frame, allowing for natural stratification. However, seedlings may not retain the purity of the parent plant's white blooms.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.
- Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
- Deadhead spent flowers to keep the plant tidy, although this will not encourage reblooming.
- Cut back foliage to ground level in late autumn or early spring to prepare the plant for new growth.
Uses
- Water Gardens: Thrives near ponds, streams, or in boggy areas, where its moisture needs are fully met.
- Borders: Adds elegance and height to damp or moisture-retentive borders, blending beautifully with other perennials.
- Naturalized Planting: Ideal for naturalizing in meadows, woodland edges, or wetland areas, creating a harmonious and serene display.
- Cut Flowers: The pristine white blooms make a sophisticated addition to floral arrangements, bringing a touch of purity and elegance indoors.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity in the garden.
- Wildlife Habitat: The dense clumps of foliage provide shelter for insects and small creatures in naturalized or water-rich environments.
- Erosion Control: The fibrous roots help stabilize soil in wet or sloped areas, reducing erosion and improving water quality.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Requires consistently moist soil for optimal growth and flowering. Avoid planting in dry or well-drained areas unless supplemental watering is provided.
- Cold Hardiness: Extremely hardy and suitable for temperate and cold climates.
- Space Requirements: Allow adequate space for the plant’s clumping habit and upright growth without overcrowding.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
