Key Points
Ligularia przewalskii (Przewalski’s Ligularia)
Ligularia przewalskii, commonly known as Przewalski's Ligularia, is a striking perennial known for its tall, elegant flower spikes and deeply lobed, dark green foliage. This moisture-loving plant thrives in damp, shaded areas and adds dramatic vertical interest to bog gardens, woodland edges, or alongside water features.
Description
- Height: 120–150 cm (48–60 inches)
- Spread: 60–90 cm (24–36 inches)
- Flowers: In midsummer (July to August), Ligularia przewalskii produces tall spikes of small, bright yellow, star-shaped flowers. These flower spikes can reach up to 150 cm (60 inches) in height, creating a bold, architectural display.
- Foliage: The deeply lobed, serrated dark green leaves form a basal clump, providing a textured and dramatic backdrop to the vertical flower spikes. The foliage has a palmate appearance, adding ornamental value even when the plant is not in bloom.
Growing Conditions
Ligularia przewalskii thrives in damp, shaded to partially shaded environments. It is well-suited for moist garden borders, bog gardens, or alongside ponds and streams.
- Soil: Prefers rich, fertile, well-drained soil that retains moisture. Adding organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, improves soil structure and fertility.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil, particularly during dry periods. It will wilt in dry conditions but can recover if watered promptly.
- Light: Partial shade is ideal, though it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates if the soil remains moist. In hot climates, protection from intense afternoon sun is essential.
Hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, Ligularia przewalskii is frost-tolerant and returns reliably each year.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or autumn. Replant the divisions in prepared soil to maintain vigor and encourage fresh growth.
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn or early spring in a cold frame. Germination can be slow but reliable under suitable conditions.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot or dry weather.
- Apply mulch annually to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil.
- Deadhead spent flower spikes to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage prolonged blooming.
- Cut back foliage to the ground in late autumn or early spring to prepare the plant for the next growing season.
Uses
- Ornamental: The tall flower spikes and dramatic foliage make Ligularia przewalskii a perfect choice for shady borders, bog gardens, or naturalized areas near water features.
- Architectural Interest: Its height and striking form make it an excellent plant for adding vertical structure and drama to garden designs.
- Companion Planting: Pairs well with other moisture-loving shade plants such as ferns, Astilbes, and Hostas, creating layered and textured plantings.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The bright yellow flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, providing a valuable nectar source during the blooming season.
- Wildlife Shelter: The dense foliage offers cover for small insects and garden creatures.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is essential to prevent wilting. The plant will not tolerate prolonged dry conditions.
- Slugs and Snails: The large leaves may be susceptible to damage from slugs and snails. Regular monitoring and control measures can help minimize this issue.
- Division: Regular division prevents overcrowding and maintains plant health and vigor.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
