Key Points
Lysimachia punctata ‘Alexander’ (Golden Candles or Golden Spire)
Lysimachia punctata ‘Alexander’, commonly known as Golden Candles or Golden Spire, is a striking cultivar of the Yellow Loosestrife, prized for its vibrant variegated foliage and bright yellow flowers. Its upright growth habit and ability to thrive in moist conditions make it a versatile choice for borders, water gardens, and naturalized areas.
Description
- Height: 60–90 cm (24–36 inches)
- Spread: 45–60 cm (18–24 inches)
- Flowers: This cultivar produces clusters of bright golden-yellow, star-shaped flowers arranged in dense whorls along upright stems. Each flower is approximately 2 cm (1 inch) across, blooming from early to mid-summer (June to August), adding a cheerful and vibrant display to the garden.
- Foliage: The lance-shaped leaves of ‘Alexander’ are a standout feature, displaying a striking variegation of green centers edged with creamy white or pale yellow. The foliage retains its color throughout the growing season, adding interest even when the plant is not in bloom.
Growing Conditions
Lysimachia punctata ‘Alexander’ is a resilient and easy-to-grow perennial that thrives in a variety of conditions, making it ideal for damp or partially shaded garden spots.
- Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay, loam, or sandy soils. Adding organic matter, such as compost, will enhance soil fertility and moisture retention.
- Water: Thrives in consistently moist conditions but can tolerate short periods of drought once established. Ideal for planting near ponds, streams, or other water features.
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, partial shade is recommended to prevent the variegated leaves from scorching.
This cultivar is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost, returning reliably each year.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to prevent overcrowding and maintain plant vigor.
- Seed: While possible to propagate by seed, division is more reliable and maintains the variegation of the foliage.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods.
- Apply mulch annually around the base of the plant to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil fertility.
- Deadhead spent flowers to extend the blooming period and reduce self-seeding.
- Cut back the stems to ground level in late autumn or early spring to tidy the plant and prepare it for the next growing season.
Uses
- Ornamental: The vibrant flowers and variegated foliage of ‘Alexander’ make it a stunning addition to garden borders, cottage gardens, and mixed perennial beds.
- Water Gardens: Thrives in damp areas, making it ideal for planting near ponds, streams, or in bog gardens.
- Naturalized Planting: Suitable for naturalizing in semi-shaded or damp areas, adding a bright, cheerful display to woodlands or meadow-like settings.
- Companion Planting: Combines beautifully with shade-tolerant plants like Hostas, ferns, and Astilbes, creating layered and textured garden designs.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The bright yellow flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, offering an important nectar source during summer.
- Wildlife Habitat: The dense foliage provides cover for small garden wildlife, contributing to biodiversity.
Considerations
- Spreading Habit: Like the species, ‘Alexander’ spreads via rhizomes and may become invasive in some conditions. Regular division or the use of root barriers can help manage its spread.
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is essential for optimal growth and flowering. Ensure the plant is watered regularly, especially during hot, dry periods.
- Foliage Maintenance: Protect the variegated foliage from excessive sun exposure in hotter climates, which can cause leaf scorch.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
