Key Points
Matteuccia struthiopteris (Ostrich Fern)
Matteuccia struthiopteris, commonly known as the Ostrich Fern, is a striking, deciduous fern prized for its tall, arching fronds that resemble the plumes of an ostrich. Its elegant, vase-like growth habit makes it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and damp areas such as pond edges or stream banks.
Description
- Height: 90–150 cm (36–60 inches)
- Spread: 60–120 cm (24–48 inches)
-
Fronds: The plant produces two distinct types of fronds:
- Sterile fronds: These are the large, feathery, green fronds that form a vase-like shape. They grow up to 150 cm (60 inches) tall and provide the plant's lush, ornamental appearance.
- Fertile fronds: These shorter, upright, dark brown fronds appear in the center of the plant in late summer. They persist through winter, adding year-round interest to the garden.
Growing Conditions
Matteuccia struthiopteris thrives in cool, damp, and shaded environments. It is ideal for naturalizing in woodland gardens or alongside water features.
- Soil: Prefers moist, rich, well-drained soil. Adding organic matter such as compost or leaf mold improves fertility and moisture retention.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil, especially during the growing season. While it tolerates brief dry periods, it performs best in consistently damp conditions.
- Light: Thrives in partial to full shade but can tolerate some morning sun, especially in cooler climates. Direct afternoon sun can scorch the fronds.
This hardy fern is frost-tolerant and thrives in temperate climates, including the UK and North America.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps in early spring or autumn. Carefully dig up the rhizomes and separate them, ensuring each division has a few buds. Replant in well-prepared soil.
- Spores: Propagate by spores for a slower but rewarding process. Collect spores from the fertile fronds and sow them on a sterile growing medium.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain consistently moist soil.
- Apply mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
- Cut back the sterile fronds in late autumn after they die back to tidy the plant and prepare for the next growing season.
- Leave the fertile fronds intact for winter interest.
Uses
- Ornamental: The graceful, arching fronds of the Ostrich Fern make it a standout feature in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or naturalized areas.
- Water Gardens: Thrives in damp areas such as pond edges, stream banks, or rain gardens, where it adds lush texture and vertical interest.
- Ground Cover: Spreads via underground rhizomes, forming dense colonies that can be used to cover large areas in shaded or damp settings.
- Edible Shoots: The young, tightly coiled fronds (fiddleheads) are edible when harvested in early spring and cooked properly, though care must be taken to avoid confusion with toxic fern species.
Ecological Value
- Wildlife Habitat: Provides cover and shelter for small animals and insects in naturalized or woodland settings.
- Erosion Control: The dense root system helps stabilize soil, making it a valuable choice for planting along stream banks or slopes.
Considerations
- Spreading Habit: Matteuccia struthiopteris spreads vigorously via rhizomes and can become invasive in ideal conditions. Use root barriers or monitor its spread to prevent it from overtaking other plants.
- Moisture Needs: Consistently moist soil is essential for healthy growth. Drought conditions may cause the fronds to wilt or die back prematurely.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
