This perennial is perfect for borders, cottage gardens, and wildlife-friendly spaces, offering a colorful and long-lasting display through the summer months.
Description
- Height: 60–75 cm (24–30 inches)

- Flowers: 'Bee-True' produces clusters of rich pink to purplish-pink tubular flowers in tiered whorls atop upright stems. The blooms appear from midsummer to early autumn (July to September), adding vibrancy and texture to the garden. The flowers’ unique shape and bright colors make them a standout in any border or pollinator garden.
- Foliage: The lance-shaped green leaves are highly aromatic, releasing a pleasant minty or citrus fragrance when crushed. The foliage is attractive and offers garden interest even after the flowers fade.
Growing Conditions
Monarda 'Bee-True' is an adaptable and easy-to-grow perennial that thrives in sunny to lightly shaded locations with consistently moist soil.
- Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil that retains moisture. Adding organic matter, such as compost, improves fertility and helps maintain consistent moisture.
- Water: Requires regular watering to keep the soil moist, especially during dry periods. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.
- Light: Full sun is ideal for optimal flowering, though the plant tolerates partial shade, particularly in warmer climates.
Hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, 'Bee-True' is frost-tolerant and reliably returns each year.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 2–3 years in early spring or autumn to prevent overcrowding, maintain vigor, and control spread. Replant divisions in well-prepared soil.
- Seed: While less common, 'Bee-True' can also be propagated from seed. Sow seeds in spring in a moist, well-drained growing medium.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture.
- Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and keep the plant looking tidy.
- Apply mulch annually to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and improve fertility.
- Cut back stems to ground level in late autumn or early spring to prepare the plant for the next growing season.
Uses
- Ornamental: The colorful blooms and upright habit of 'Bee-True' make it perfect for borders, cottage gardens, and perennial beds.
- Wildlife Gardens: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it ideal for pollinator-friendly spaces.
- Herbal Uses: The aromatic foliage is sometimes used for teas and potpourris due to its minty or citrus scent.
- Cut Flowers: The vibrant flowers make excellent additions to fresh floral arrangements, adding texture and color.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The tubular flowers are a favorite among bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, providing a vital nectar source during the blooming season.
- Deer Resistance: The aromatic foliage deters deer, making it a reliable choice for gardens in areas prone to browsing.
Considerations
-
Powdery Mildew: Like other Monarda varieties, 'Bee-True' may be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions or areas with poor air circulation. To reduce the risk:
- Space plants to ensure good air circulation.
- Water at the base of the plant rather than overhead.
- Choose a well-drained location.
- Spreading Habit: Monarda spreads via rhizomes, so regular division may be necessary to prevent overcrowding and manage its spread.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
