Growing Conditions
Myosotis scorpioides 'Variegata' thrives in consistently moist to wet environments and is particularly well-suited to water gardens.
- Soil: Prefers rich, moist, or wet soil that is well-drained. It thrives in loamy, clay, or sandy soils if moisture is retained.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil and thrives in shallow standing water, making it ideal for pond edges, streams, or boggy areas.
- Light: Grows best in full sun to partial shade. In warmer climates, partial shade helps prevent the variegated foliage from scorching.
This plant is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Propagate by dividing clumps in early spring or autumn. Replant divisions in moist soil or directly at the water's edge.
- Seed: Sow seeds in early spring in a moist growing medium. Keep the soil consistently damp until germination.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain soil moisture, especially during dry periods.
- Trim back overgrown stems after flowering to encourage compact growth and prevent spreading into unwanted areas.
- Mulch around the base annually to retain moisture and enrich the soil.
- Remove any dead or damaged foliage to maintain the plant’s attractive appearance.
Uses
- Water Gardens: Thrives along the edges of ponds, streams, or in boggy areas, creating a naturalistic and charming display.
- Ground Cover: Forms a dense mat in damp garden areas, suppressing weeds and softening hard edges.
- Naturalized Planting: Perfect for wildflower meadows or woodland settings with consistently moist soils.
- Containers: Can be grown in containers near water features, where its variegated foliage and delicate flowers add interest.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity.
- Wildlife Habitat: Dense foliage provides cover for small insects and amphibians near water.
- Erosion Control: The spreading habit and fibrous root system help stabilize soil in wet or sloped areas, reducing erosion.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Requires consistently moist or wet soil to thrive. Avoid planting in dry or sandy conditions without supplemental watering.
- Spread Management: While not invasive, its creeping habit may require occasional trimming to keep it contained.
- Light Sensitivity: Protect variegated foliage from harsh afternoon sun in warmer climates to avoid scorching.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
