Ophiopogon japonicus (Mondo Grass)
Ophiopogon japonicus, commonly known as Mondo Grass, is a versatile, low-maintenance evergreen perennial valued for its fine, grass-like foliage and its adaptability to a wide range of garden settings. Ideal as ground cover, edging, or underplanting for trees and shrubs, this plant adds texture and year-round greenery to the landscape.
Description
- Height: 15–30 cm (6–12 inches)
- Spread: 20–30 cm (8–12 inches)
- Foliage: The plant forms dense tufts of narrow, arching, dark green leaves that resemble grass. The foliage is evergreen, maintaining its lush appearance throughout the year.
- Flowers: In summer (July to August), Ophiopogon japonicus produces small, bell-shaped, pale lilac to white flowers that rise just above the foliage. These flowers are subtle but add a delicate charm.
- Fruits: Following the flowers, the plant produces small, dark blue to black berries that provide additional visual interest.
Growing Conditions
Ophiopogon japonicus is adaptable and thrives in a variety of garden environments, from sun to shade and in different soil types.
- Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. It is tolerant of a wide range of soils, including sandy or clay soils.
- Water: Requires regular watering until established, after which it becomes drought-tolerant. It thrives in consistently moist conditions but does not tolerate waterlogged soil.
- Light: Grows well in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, it performs best in partial to full shade, as intense sun may scorch the foliage.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Propagate by division in spring or autumn. Lift clumps and divide them into smaller sections, ensuring each has roots attached, then replant in prepared soil.
- Seed: Propagation by seed is slower but possible. Sow seeds in a moist, well-drained medium in a sheltered environment.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly during dry periods, especially for young plants.
- Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Remove damaged or yellowing leaves as needed to maintain a tidy appearance.
- In early spring, tidy up the plant by trimming back any older, weathered foliage to encourage fresh growth.
Uses
- Ground Cover: Forms dense mats that are perfect for covering bare soil, suppressing weeds, and creating a uniform appearance.
- Edging: Works well as edging along pathways, borders, or flower beds, adding a clean and structured look.
- Underplanting: Ideal for planting beneath trees or shrubs where it provides lush greenery and requires minimal maintenance.
- Rock Gardens: The fine, grassy foliage contrasts beautifully with rocks and stones in rock garden settings.
- Containers: Ophiopogon japonicus also thrives in containers, providing year-round interest for patios or balconies.
Ecological Value
- Wildlife: The flowers attract pollinators, such as bees, and the berries can provide food for birds.
- Erosion Control: Its dense root system helps stabilize soil, making it useful for planting on slopes or embankments.
Considerations
- Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-free, but overwatering or poorly drained soil can lead to root rot.
- Growth Rate: Ophiopogon japonicus is slow-growing, so patience is required when establishing large areas of ground cover.
- Maintenance: Minimal maintenance is needed, but occasional tidying and trimming improve its appearance.
Varieties
Some popular varieties of Ophiopogon japonicus include:
- Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana': A dwarf variety with shorter foliage, ideal for small spaces or compact ground cover.
- Ophiopogon japonicus 'Silver Mist': Features variegated green and white foliage, adding a unique visual element to garden designs.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
