Key Points
Oxalis corymbosa (Pink Wood Sorrel)
Oxalis corymbosa, commonly known as Pink Wood Sorrel, is a low-growing perennial plant that is prized for its delicate, clover-like foliage and clusters of bright pink, funnel-shaped flowers. Known for its resilience and ability to thrive in various conditions, this plant is commonly used as a ground cover or as an ornamental addition to borders and containers.
Description
- Height: 10–20 cm (4–8 inches)
- Spread: 20–30 cm (8–12 inches)
- Flowers: The flowers of Oxalis corymbosa are vibrant pink with darker pink or magenta veins, forming clusters on slender stalks. The blooms appear in late spring and continue sporadically through summer and early autumn.
- Foliage: The trifoliate, clover-like leaves are bright green, forming a dense mat of foliage that is both ornamental and functional. The leaves may fold in low light or during nighttime.
- Growth Habit: Creeping and spreading through underground rhizomes or bulbils, making it an effective ground cover in appropriate areas.
Growing Conditions
Oxalis corymbosa is highly adaptable and thrives in a variety of garden conditions.
- Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil, but tolerates a wide range of soil types, including sandy or clay soils. It performs best in fertile, organic-rich soil.
- Water: Requires consistent moisture during active growth but tolerates short periods of dryness once established.
- Light: Grows well in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, partial shade helps prevent the foliage from scorching.
This plant is hardy in mild temperate climates and tolerates frost in protected areas.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Propagate by dividing clumps or separating bulbils in spring or autumn. Replant divisions in moist, prepared soil.
- Seed: Less commonly propagated by seed, as it spreads effectively through rhizomes or bulbils.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry spells.
- Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.
- Trim back overgrown foliage to encourage fresh growth and prevent overcrowding.
- Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Uses
- Ground Cover: Ideal for creating a dense, low-maintenance carpet in borders, under trees, or in rock gardens.
- Containers: Grows well in containers or hanging baskets, where its trailing habit and vibrant flowers add interest.
- Borders: Adds color and texture to garden beds, particularly when used as an edging plant.
- Ornamental Planting: Its bright pink flowers and lush foliage make it a charming addition to mixed plantings.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
- Wildlife Habitat: The dense foliage provides shelter for small insects in the garden.
Considerations
- Invasiveness: Oxalis corymbosa can spread aggressively through rhizomes or bulbils in some regions, particularly in warm climates. Regular maintenance may be needed to control its spread.
- Moisture Needs: While tolerant of short dry spells, consistent watering ensures the healthiest growth and most prolific blooming.
- Frost Sensitivity: While hardy in mild climates, it may require protection or replanting in colder regions.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
