Key Points
Petasites albus (White Butterbur)
Petasites albus, commonly known as White Butterbur, is a hardy perennial plant recognized for its large, striking foliage and early-blooming white flower spikes. Native to moist, shaded environments, it is ideal for naturalizing in damp areas such as stream banks, pond edges, or woodland gardens.
Description
- Height: 30–60 cm (12–24 inches)
- Spread: 90–120 cm (35–47 inches) or more, as it spreads vigorously via rhizomes.
- Flowers: White Butterbur produces clusters of small, creamy-white, star-shaped flowers on erect stems in late winter to early spring (February to April), even before the foliage emerges. The flowers are lightly fragrant and attract early pollinators.
- Foliage: After flowering, large, kidney-shaped green leaves emerge, forming dense clumps. The leaves can grow up to 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) wide, creating a lush and bold ground cover.
Growing Conditions
Petasites albus thrives in moist, shaded environments and is particularly well-suited for planting in naturalized settings or near water features.
- Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. It tolerates clay soils if they remain consistently damp.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil, especially during the growing season. It thrives in wet areas but does not tolerate prolonged drought.
- Light: Best grown in partial to full shade. It can tolerate dappled sunlight but performs poorly in direct, harsh sunlight.
Hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, Petasites albus is frost-tolerant and reliable, returning year after year.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Propagate by dividing rhizomes in early spring or autumn. This is the most effective way to control its spread and establish new plants.
- Seed: Sow seeds in early spring in a damp, well-drained medium. Seed propagation is slower and less common than division.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.
- Apply mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil fertility.
- Trim back dead or damaged leaves as needed to maintain a tidy appearance.
- Monitor its spread, as Petasites albus can become invasive in ideal conditions.
Uses
- Ground Cover: The large, bold foliage makes it an excellent ground cover for shaded and moist areas, suppressing weeds and adding texture.
- Naturalized Planting: Perfect for naturalizing in woodland gardens, damp meadows, or along stream banks and pond edges.
- Erosion Control: Its dense root system helps stabilize soil in wet or sloped areas, preventing erosion.
- Wildlife Habitat: Provides shelter for small garden creatures and supports early pollinators with its flowers.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The early-blooming flowers attract bees and other pollinators, providing a valuable nectar source at the start of the growing season.
- Wildlife Shelter: The large leaves offer shade and cover for insects and small animals.
Considerations
-
Invasiveness: Petasites albus spreads aggressively via rhizomes and can become invasive in favorable conditions. To prevent uncontrolled spreading:
- Plant in contained areas or use root barriers.
- Regularly monitor and remove unwanted shoots.
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is essential for healthy growth. It will not tolerate prolonged dryness.
- Space Requirements: The plant spreads rapidly and requires ample space to accommodate its vigorous growth habit.
Summary
Petasites albus (White Butterbur) is a bold, moisture-loving perennial that thrives in shaded and damp garden spaces. Its large, lush foliage and early-blooming flowers make it an attractive addition to woodland gardens, water features, and naturalized landscapes. While its vigorous growth habit requires management, it offers excellent ground cover, erosion control, and ecological benefits, making it a valuable choice for gardeners with ample space and moist conditions.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
