Key Points
Phalaris arundinacea var. picta (Gardener's Garters)
Phalaris arundinacea var. picta, commonly known as Gardener’s Garters, is a striking ornamental grass prized for its attractive variegated foliage. Its vigorous growth and tolerance for a wide range of conditions make it a popular choice for borders, water gardens, and naturalized areas.
Description
- Height: 60–100 cm (24–39 inches)
- Spread: 60–90 cm (24–35 inches) or more, as it spreads through rhizomes.
- Foliage: The narrow, arching leaves are green with creamy white vertical stripes, creating a bold and elegant variegated effect. The foliage remains visually striking throughout the growing season.
- Flowers: In summer (June to August), the plant produces airy, greenish flower panicles on tall stems that rise above the foliage. The flowers turn a soft tan as they mature, adding a delicate, textural element to the garden.
Growing Conditions
Phalaris arundinacea var. picta is a hardy and adaptable plant that thrives in a variety of conditions.
- Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil but is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils. It performs exceptionally well in wet or boggy areas.
- Water: Thrives in consistently moist to wet conditions, making it ideal for planting near ponds, streams, or other water features. Once established, it can tolerate brief periods of drought.
- Light: Grows best in full sun to partial shade. In shaded areas, the variegation may be less pronounced.
This grass is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and is frost-tolerant.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 2–3 years in early spring or autumn to maintain vigor and control its spread.
- Seed: Propagation by seed is possible but less common. Sow seeds in spring in a moist, well-drained growing medium.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially in dry periods.
- Apply mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil fertility.
- Cut back the foliage to ground level in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth.
- Monitor its spread, as Gardener’s Garters can become invasive in favorable conditions.
Uses
- Ornamental Grass: The variegated foliage makes Gardener’s Garters an attractive feature in borders, mixed plantings, and water gardens.
- Ground Cover: Its vigorous growth habit allows it to quickly cover large areas, suppressing weeds and stabilizing soil.
- Water Gardens: Ideal for planting along pond edges, streams, or in boggy areas where its bold foliage contrasts beautifully with other plants.
- Naturalized Planting: Perfect for wild or meadow-style gardens, adding texture and movement.
Ecological Value
- Erosion Control: The dense root system stabilizes soil in wet areas, preventing erosion and improving water quality.
- Wildlife Habitat: The foliage provides shelter for small creatures, while the flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Considerations
-
Invasiveness: Phalaris arundinacea var. picta spreads aggressively via rhizomes and can become invasive if not managed. To control its spread:
- Use root barriers or plant in containers.
- Regularly divide and thin clumps to prevent overcrowding.
- Variegation Maintenance: In shaded areas or overly rich soils, the variegation may fade. Ensure the plant receives adequate sunlight for the best appearance.
- Moisture Needs: Consistently moist soil is ideal, but the plant can tolerate some dryness once established.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
