Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' (Chinese Globeflower)
Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' is a stunning perennial prized for its vibrant golden-orange flowers and elegant, deeply lobed foliage. This moisture-loving plant thrives in damp soils, making it a perfect choice for pond edges, bog gardens, or shaded borders, where it brings a cheerful splash of color to the garden.
Description
- Height: 60–90 cm (24–36 inches)
- Spread: 30–45 cm (12–18 inches)
- Flowers: The flowers are large (5–8 cm or 2–3 inches across), cup-shaped, and a brilliant golden-orange with contrasting darker orange stamens in the center. The blooms appear on sturdy stems above the foliage from late spring to midsummer (May to July).
- Foliage: The deeply divided, dark green leaves are palmate and form a dense clump at the base, adding texture to the garden even when the plant is not in bloom.
Growing Conditions
Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' thrives in moist, fertile soils and shaded to partially sunny locations.
- Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil that retains moisture. Adding compost or organic matter enhances fertility and water retention.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil, particularly during the growing season. Ideal for planting near ponds, streams, or boggy areas.
- Light: Grows well in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, partial shade is recommended to prevent wilting during intense afternoon heat.
This plant is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or autumn to maintain plant vigor and prevent overcrowding. Replant divisions in prepared, moist soil.
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn in a damp, well-drained growing medium. Germination may be slow, requiring stratification (cold treatment).
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.
- Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.
- Apply mulch annually to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil.
- Cut back stems and foliage to ground level in late autumn to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
Uses
- Ornamental: The vibrant flowers and elegant foliage of ‘Golden Queen’ make it a standout feature in bog gardens, pond edges, or shaded borders.
- Water Gardens: Thrives in moist, water-rich areas, making it ideal for planting near streams, ponds, or in rain gardens.
- Naturalized Planting: Perfect for naturalizing in damp meadows or woodland edges, creating a lush and colorful display.
- Cut Flowers: The long-lasting blooms are excellent for cutting, adding vibrant color to floral arrangements.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity during late spring and early summer.
- Wildlife Habitat: Provides shelter for insects and small creatures in damp garden areas.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is essential for optimal growth and flowering. The plant may struggle in dry soils or areas with prolonged drought.
- Light Requirements: While it thrives in full sun in cooler climates, partial shade is recommended in warmer regions to prevent stress from excessive heat.
- Division: Regular division prevents overcrowding and promotes healthy growth.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
