Key Points
Trollius chinensis 'Superbus' (Chinese Globeflower)
Trollius chinensis 'Superbus' is a robust and eye-catching perennial known for its vibrant golden-orange flowers and clumping habit. Ideal for damp or boggy areas, this cheerful plant brings a vivid splash of color to pond edges, borders, and naturalized gardens.
Description
- Height: 60–80 cm (24–32 inches)
- Spread: 30–45 cm (12–18 inches)
- Flowers: ‘Superbus’ features large, bowl-shaped golden-orange flowers with a slight sheen, measuring 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) across. The blooms are slightly more open than traditional globe-shaped varieties and feature prominent orange stamens. Flowering occurs from late spring to midsummer (May to July), adding warmth to the garden.
- Foliage: The deeply divided, dark green, lobed leaves form a compact, bushy clump at the base, providing texture and visual interest even when the plant is not in bloom.
Growing Conditions
Trollius chinensis 'Superbus' thrives in moist, fertile soils and prefers cooler conditions, making it ideal for water-rich or partially shaded garden spaces.
- Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil that retains moisture. Enrich the soil with compost or organic matter for better fertility and moisture retention.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil, especially during the growing season. Perfect for planting near ponds, streams, or boggy areas.
- Light: Grows best in full sun to partial shade. In warmer climates, provide some afternoon shade to prevent wilting.
Hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, 'Superbus' is frost-tolerant and returns reliably year after year.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or autumn to maintain vigor and control size. Replant divisions in well-prepared, moist soil.
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn in a damp, well-drained medium. Germination can take time and often benefits from stratification (cold treatment).
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially in dry periods.
- Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and improve the plant's appearance.
- Mulch around the base annually to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil.
- Cut back stems and foliage to ground level in late autumn to prepare for winter dormancy.
Uses
- Ornamental: The vibrant orange blooms and tidy growth habit make ‘Superbus’ a standout feature in bog gardens, pond edges, and borders.
- Water Gardens: Thrives in damp areas, making it ideal for planting near ponds, streams, or in rain gardens.
- Naturalized Planting: Perfect for naturalizing in woodland edges, meadows, or moist, semi-shaded areas.
- Cut Flowers: The long-lasting blooms are excellent for cutting and add vivid color to floral arrangements.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, supporting biodiversity during the late spring and summer months.
- Wildlife Habitat: Provides shelter for insects and small creatures in damp, naturalized areas.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistently moist soil is essential for optimal growth and flowering. The plant will struggle in dry or overly sandy soils.
- Light Requirements: Full sun promotes the best flowering in cooler climates, while partial shade is recommended in warmer regions to prevent stress from excessive heat.
- Division: Regular division ensures healthy growth and prevents the plant from becoming overcrowded.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
