As the season ends, its oval green leaves turn red and purple, so the blue flowers shine against the autumn colour. It holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit and suits the front of borders, rock gardens and ground cover.

Grow in full sun in well-drained soil, ideally in a sheltered, south- or east-facing spot; it tolerates chalk, clay and dry conditions once established. It is hardy in most of the UK but is slow to emerge in spring, so mark its position. Cut back old or frost-damaged stems to ground level in early spring. It is generally trouble-free, and late flowers help pollinators.
