Hosta 'Mama Mia' - 2026

Hosta ‘Mama Mia’ is a beautiful medium-sized perennial known for its striking variegated foliage. It has broadly heart-shaped, corrugated dark green leaves with wide margins of golden yellow, which often fade toward creamy ivory later in the season, creating a glowing contrast that lightens the shade garden. The texture and colour of the foliage are the main attractions, giving interest even when the plant is not in bloom.

In mid to late summer it sends up upright scapes bearing pale lavender or mauve, bell- or funnel-shaped flowers that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. This hosta thrives in moist, fertile, well-drained soil and prefers partial to full shade, especially avoiding harsh afternoon sun which can scorch lighter margins. It is moderately low-maintenance, with some resilience to slugs, and works well in borders, mixed plantings or containers. It is non-native in the UK.
