Hosta ventricosa - 2026

Hosta ventricosa is a large perennial with lush, heart-shaped leaves that are dark green, glossy and strongly corrugated, producing a textured and dramatic foliage display. In summer it sends up tall, erect stems bearing clusters of bell-shaped deep purple to violet flowers that rise well above the foliage, creating vertical focal points. This species thrives in moist, rich, well-drained soil and does well in shady or partially shaded spots, especially under trees or at the woodland edge, and tolerates some sun if the soil stays moist.

Beyond its decorative look, H. ventricosa contributes ecological value by attracting pollinators when in flower and by forming dense clumps that help suppress weeds. It is fairly resilient once established and provides long-lasting structure and foliage in the garden with relatively low maintenance.
