Key Points
Caltha palustris ‘Alba’, commonly known as White Marigold, is a charming aquatic perennial that is a white-flowered variant of the popular Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold). Native to Europe, Asia, and North America, this plant thrives in wetland environments, making it an excellent choice for pond margins, bog gardens, and other damp areas. Its elegant white flowers and lush green foliage provide a fresh and delicate touch to water gardens.
Description
Caltha palustris ‘Alba’ grows to a height of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches), forming a dense clump of rounded, kidney-shaped, or heart-shaped leaves. The foliage is bright green and glossy, creating an attractive backdrop for the plant's flowers.
From early to mid-spring (March to May), this variety produces delicate, pure white flowers with a slight greenish tinge at the center. Each flower has five to nine petal-like sepals and a cluster of bright yellow stamens. The flowers are about 2.5–4 cm (1–1.5 inches) in diameter and rise on sturdy stems above the foliage. Unlike the more common yellow-flowered Caltha palustris, the Alba variety offers a softer, more subdued colour palette that complements other spring-flowering plants.
Growing Conditions
Caltha palustris ‘Alba’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently wet or waterlogged soil. It is ideal for planting in shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep or along the edges of ponds, streams, or in boggy areas. The plant performs best in nutrient-rich, slightly acidic to neutral soils and tolerates clay, loam, and sandy conditions, provided moisture levels are maintained.
Hardy in the UK, this plant can withstand frost and will return each spring after winter dormancy. Its early blooming habit makes it a valuable addition to spring gardens.
Propagation and Care
Caltha palustris ‘Alba’ can be propagated by division or seed. Division is the most reliable method and is best done in early spring or autumn. Simply lift the plant, separate the clumps into smaller sections, and replant them in suitable conditions. Seeds can also be sown in wet soil in late summer or autumn, though they may take longer to establish.
Once established, White Marigold is low-maintenance. It requires regular watering to ensure the soil remains moist, especially during dry periods. Deadheading spent flowers and removing yellowing foliage will help keep the plant looking tidy and encourage healthy growth.
Uses
Ornamental:
Caltha palustris ‘Alba’ is perfect for water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens, where its elegant white flowers create a serene and naturalistic look. It pairs beautifully with other moisture-loving plants, such as Iris pseudacorus (Yellow Flag Iris) and Myosotis scorpioides (Water Forget-Me-Not).
Naturalizing:
This plant is ideal for naturalizing in wetland areas, where it can spread to form dense clumps, stabilizing soil and enhancing the landscape with its delicate blooms.
Ecological Value
White Marigold supports local wildlife by providing nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators during its blooming period. Its foliage also offers shelter for small aquatic creatures and insects, contributing to the overall biodiversity of wetland ecosystems.
Considerations
- Moisture Requirements: Caltha palustris ‘Alba’ requires consistently moist or waterlogged soil to thrive. It is not suitable for dry or well-drained areas.
- Self-Seeding: While not aggressive, the plant may self-seed in optimal conditions, which can be beneficial for naturalizing but may require management in smaller spaces.
- Toxicity: All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so it should be planted with care in areas accessible to pets or children.
Summary
With its graceful white flowers and lush green foliage, Caltha palustris ‘Alba’ is a stunning addition to water gardens, boggy landscapes, and pond margins. Its early spring blooms provide a fresh start to the growing season, and its ability to thrive in wet conditions makes it a valuable plant for enhancing the beauty and biodiversity of aquatic environments. Easy to grow and maintain, White Marigold is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add elegance and functionality to their water features.

At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
